Intellectual Humility
I wrote about the "Power of 'I Don't Know'" a couple of weeks ago.
Today, the famous investor Howard Marks (UChicago Booth alumnus) discussed the same topic in his newest memo called "Folly of Certainty." I encourage you to give it a listen.
Mr. Marks more elegantly and thoroughly discusses this concept of "I don't know" and how it relates to the understanding of the world, financial markets, how to consider views of others, how to consider our own limits, and intellectual humility.
I like how Mr. Marks brings all these related considerations together with intellectual humility. We certainly don't know everything, and it is wise to know what we don't know. If we have the humility and the awareness of our limits, we are better equipped to make better decisions in a world of uncertainties and probabilities. This makes sense; being intellectual humble enables one to stay curious, learn, stay open minded, and collaborate.
As my Great Uncle Father Gerald McMahon used to say (and I tell my kids all the time): “There are theee things you need to learn in life: humility, humility and more humility.” (And yes for the record I think it was actually St. Augustine that originally said some version of this.)
