After NVIDIA and AMD, arch-rival Intel is all set to host its event ‘AI Everywhere’ on December 14, and speculations are rife surrounding the “big announcements” that may be dropped to launch challenger products against the former two.
The first in line is the expected launch of the Gaudi3 AI accelerator chip, a 5nm chip which would perform twice as fast as Gaudi2. It’s expected the new accelerator will come with a major boost in performance. They offer 4x BFloat16 capabilities, double the compute power, 1.5x network bandwidth, and 1.5x HBM capacity (144GB vs. 96GB). The next generation (Falcon Shores) will arrive in 2025, combining Gaudi's AI prowess with the power of Intel GPUs in a single package.
With the launch of Gaudi3, the battle between the trio will get intense as old Gaudi2 works 2.4 times faster than the NVIDIA A100 , and is almost closing in on the H100 Hopper GPU.?
The next big announcement will be the launch of Meteor Lake at the event. It promises twice the graphics performance, a dedicated "low power island" for independent task handling, and direct integration with Microsoft Windows for intelligent chip control.?
Intel showcased its commitment to AI democratisation with the ‘AI PC’ concept, aiming to bring AI capabilities directly to personal computers. This concept is powered by Intel's upcoming ‘Meteor Lake’ laptop chip with new AI features, allowing users to run generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT and inference models like Llama 2 locally.
At the upcoming event, Intel might even announce the launch time for Lake lineups — Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake scheduled for 2024 and 2025.
To boost the sales of its accelerators and pose a major competition to rivals, Intel also plans to partner with Stability.AI , which would purchase a Gaudi2-based AI supercomputer with Xeon processors overseeing 4,000 Gaudi2 accelerators.?
