Intel Amazes at CES* 2017

January's 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show* (International CES*) in Las Vegas was a much-anticipated showcase of future retail and industrial technologies. Intel provided plenty of "wow factor" to this year's event by announcing breakthroughs in virtual reality (VR), 5G networking, and essential contributions to the advancement of self-driving cars and home computing.

Virtual Reality

The latest release of Intel? Core? i7 processors are at the heart of VR-enabled PC devices. These provide the horsepower to provide rich, accurate game physics, precise control and interactions, 360-degree visual immersion, plus 3D sound without a hiccup.

Along with VR headsets from trusted partners, this new generation of VR powered by Intel? processors is enabling "merged reality" experiences in which VR and real world objects and interactions are seamlessly intertwined.

5G Networks

It’s projected there will be 50 billion devices interconnected over the next few years, which is the impetus for the development of a new 5G modem announced at CES* 2017. Fast, wide-channel, low-latency networking is the key to success for the anticipated zettabytes of data flow from the Internet of Things (IoT), self-driving cars, urban infrastructure, and new business models yet to be imagined.

The new Intel? 5G modem is the first transceiver to work on both the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands. Its capabilities support speeds greater than 5 Gbps with low latency and hundreds of MHz of bandwidth.

Intel is leading the way toward 5G network infrastructure technologies from devices to data centers.

Self-Driving Cars

2017 is set up to be a landmark year in the deployment of self-driving cars in no small part due to the CES* announcement of a partnership between Intel, BMW*, and Mobileye* that intends to deploy 40 autonomous vehicles for public road tests later this year in both the U.S. and Europe.

While Mobileye* provides the sensors package, Intel supplies the high-demand processing power required to make autonomous vehicles a practical reality. They announced in late 2016 at the LA Auto Show* a $250 million commitment to self-driving car technology.

Although all three partners are working independently, they have a common goal, which is to create mass-market autonomous driving systems that will fit in car models of all sizes.

Credit Card Size PC Device

Intel added to its impressive list of innovations in PC devices with their CES* announcement of the Intel? Compute Card. It can literally fit in your wallet as it measures just 95 mm by 55 mm with a thickness of 5 mm.

It includes app and graphics processing using Intel? System on Chip (SoC) technology, RAM, SSD storage and wireless connectivity. It connects to other devices with USB and HDMI.

Its size and capabilities make it an ideal solution for building a collection of independent, dedicated functions that coordinate through a central hub. It also enables separate update or swap-out of functionality without requiring the upgrade or purchase of a central computational unit.

Thus, instead of replacing a laptop or smart TV, swapping in a new Intel? Compute Card could supply more processing horsepower or new features instantly at low cost.

The Intel? Compute Card is expected to ship mid-2017 integrated into the products of several industry partners.

CES* 2017 again highlighted Intel's potential to pique interest in the world of high-tech with exciting technologies in the areas of VR, 5G networking, self-driving cars, and ever-smaller device platforms. Educating your sales staff on such developments helps them transfer additional excitement to customers for the Intel? products already on your shelves.

Sales associates can maintain keen product knowledge about Intel* products and technologies via the Intel? Retail Edge Program. They will become part of an engaging online community of sales associates who learn about the latest products and relevant sales tips, while earning rewards for their efforts.
