Integrity is Doing What is Right (especially when no one is watching)

Understanding Integrity

Integrity is a concept of consistency in one's actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. It is one of the fundamental virtues that makes up the moral fiber of an individual. It’s about being honest, upright, and whole, even when no one is watching. In a conversation with a Past President of our Institute Winson Chan, KStG, FRI, CIPS, CLHMS, MBA , he reminded me that a commitment to integrity builds a successful career, builds lasting relationships with clients, customers, and colleagues.

The Essence of Integrity

Integrity is often associated with morality and ethics. It is about doing what is right, not what is easy or convenient. It’s about standing up for what you believe in and sticking to your principles. It’s about being true to yourself and your values, even when you’re under pressure to act otherwise. As Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC) | Institut canadien de l'immeuble (ICI) built out practical content for our REIC 2600: Ethics in Business Practice course, our Institute President - Neil Fawcett, CPM?, ARM?, C.E.R.E., Associate, BA (C.E.R.E. stands for Certified in Ethical Real Estate - in case you were wondering) masterfully explores the significant role of integrity in condominium managers, as they navigate complicated, and ethically challenging situations.

Integrity in Action

In practical terms, integrity manifests in many ways. For instance, it’s about fulfilling promises and meeting commitments, no matter how small they may seem. It’s about treating everyone with respect and fairness, regardless of their status or background. It’s about admitting mistakes and taking responsibility for one’s actions. One of our partners, Humber College , is collaborating with us on an incredible program that explores the fair and ethical treatment of all people. Seems likes such an obvious thing to say, but not always easy to do.

The Role of Integrity in Society

Integrity plays a crucial role in society. It fosters trust and facilitates constructive communication, which are essential for any healthy relationship, be it personal or professional. In the workplace, integrity is key to building a positive work culture where employees feel valued and motivated. In the broader society, integrity is the bedrock of institutions that function effectively and equitably.

The Challenge of Upholding Integrity

Maintaining integrity is not always easy. It requires moral courage and resilience. There will be times when sticking to your principles may lead to loss or hardship. However, the cost of compromising integrity is often much higher, leading to loss of self-respect and trust from others.

Final Thoughts

Integrity is more than just a moral concept. It’s a way of life. It’s about being consistent in thought and action and living out your values with courage and conviction. It’s about being the best version of yourself for your benefit and the benefit of those around you.

Members of the Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC) | Institut canadien de l'immeuble (ICI) adhere to a Code of Ethics, Professional Standards, and a personal commitment to always do the right thing.

Make sure you are dealing with a professional who is doing the right things -even when you are not there.
