Integration of Sports in Education: NEP 2020

The integration of sports in education has been recognized as a vital component of holistic development. In recent times sports in India’s education system has gained unprecedented importance.

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the integration of sports and physical education into the curriculum. The pinnacle of sports events, the Paris Olympics 2024 has concluded with India coming home with six medals. It highlights that sports and physical education needs to be introduced in a child’s early years.

NEP 2020 advocates the integration of sports through a cross-curricular pedagogical approach while utilising physical activities to develop essential life skills. It envisions a future where fitness becomes a lifelong pursuit and cognitive abilities are enhanced through sports-integrated learning. The aim is to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being, ensuring that every student, regardless of background or location, has access to sports facilities and opportunities.

The policy advocates the concept of "Sports for All," fostering a culture of inclusivity and teamwork. It also highlights the importance of teacher training in physical education, incorporation of Indigenous sports, and inclusion of vocational education in sports-related fields to create career pathways. Schools are encouraged to form sports clubs, organize extracurricular activities, and ensure that sports participation is inclusive, particularly for students with disabilities. By assessing students' physical fitness and participation in sports as part of their overall performance, the NEP places importance on sports alongside academic achievements.
