Integrating Strategy, Human Resources and Risk Management

Over the years HCM has worked with many corporates across multiple industries to help them develop their strategy. One key risk to strategic execution that keeps surfacing time and again is the inability to align their human resources and risk management strategies to the overall corporate strategy. Integrating strategy, human resources (HR), and risk management is crucial for organisations to achieve their goals effectively and sustainably. This integration helps align the workforce with the organisation's strategic objectives while mitigating potential risks that could hinder the achievement of those objectives. This is how the three elements should be integrated:

Ensure that there is Strategic Alignment:

  1. Start by ensuring that the organisation's strategic goals and objectives are well-defined and communicated throughout the organisation.
  2. Involve HR in the strategic planning process to identify the workforce capabilities required to execute the strategy successfully.
  3. HR should collaborate with top management to ensure that the HR policies, practices, and talent acquisition strategies are aligned with the strategic direction of the company.

Develop a multi-year Talent Management plan:

  1. HR plays a pivotal role in talent acquisition, development, and retention. Ensure that HR practices are designed to attract and retain employees who possess the skills and competencies needed to execute the strategy.
  2. Create a talent development plan that includes training, mentoring, and career development opportunities to prepare employees for strategic roles.
  3. Regularly assess and adjust HR strategies to meet changing organisational needs and market conditions.
  4. Ensure that there is succession planning for critical roles that evolves with the business strategy.

Risk Management is a key component of the strategy development process:

  1. Identify and assess risks that could potentially impact the organisation's ability to execute its strategy. This includes financial, operational, compliance, and reputational risks.
  2. The ability to manage and mitigate risks should factor strongly when considering strategic options and key decisions.
  3. Develop a comprehensive risk management framework that includes risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and monitoring processes.
  4. Ensure that HR policies and practices incorporate risk management considerations, such as compliance with employment laws, workplace safety, and cybersecurity protocols.

Link Employee Engagement and Culture initiatives to strategic goals:

  1. Cultivate a corporate culture that aligns with the organisation's values and strategic objectives. Engaged and motivated employees are more likely to contribute positively to the strategy's success.
  2. HR should focus on employee engagement, satisfaction, and well-being to create a workforce that is committed to the organisation's goals.

Involve the Risk team in Scenario Planning:

  1. Develop scenarios and contingency plans that account for potential disruptions or changes in the business environment. These scenarios should consider workforce-related risks and how HR can respond effectively.

By integrating strategy, HR, and risk management, organisations can optimize their human capital, reduce the likelihood of risks derailing strategic initiatives, and create a more resilient and adaptable organisation. This alignment enhances an organisation's ability to achieve long-term success.

At HCM, we believe that integrating HR and risk considerations into strategic planning is a critical success factor for strategy execution, which is why we offer holistic strategy, human resources and risk solutions to our corporate clients.
