Integrating Confidence and Success to Combat Failure Project.

Integrating Confidence and Success to Combat Failure Project.

This week we highlight the Integrating Confidence and Success to Combat Failure Project. The project was aimed at bridging the gap in educating African Youth on the importance of self-confidence, especially when it comes to the pursuit of success.

The goal of the project was to empower and encourage young African students to be more confident in themselves through motivational speaking and group activities. This would help them shake away the fear of failure and allow them to unlearn the mentality that failure equates to the end.?

The project’s main activity was hosting workshops that incorporated activities geared towards building one’s self-confidence, handling failure and lessons on how to journal and set goals. Guest speakers were invited to inspire the students with their life-changing stories of how they have overcome failure and the tools and experiences that guided them throughout the process.

The students participated in fun and engaging activities such as

Transforming negative self-talk - they learnt to recognise what triggers negative self-talk and how to reframe these thoughts positively with the purpose to overcome them and boost confidence.

Certificate of recognition- This activity trained them to look for the positive and celebrate even small achievements and accomplishments.

Practising positive affirmations - They were introduced to the use of affirmations to help them combat low self-esteem

Journaling - Journaling was introduced for them to learn how to set and keep track of their goals. It also helped to build their writing stamina which was vital in their progress in school and also for them to discover the pleasure of writing.

Guest speakers - Students got an opportunity to listen to speakers who?shared their experiences in overcoming challenges and their pursuit of success as students and later on in life.

At the end of the?workshops, the participants had learnt how to recognise, approach and combat failure in addition to setting goals and practising confidence. They were also given a self-care package which included a journaling kit, journaling prompts, a journaling instruction guide and affirmation cards.

Impact

The project had targeted to reach around 20 participants. They managed to get to about 85% of this.?There was a desire for more potential beneficiaries but limited slots were available. However, upcoming workshops would be able to?host more beneficiaries

A lot of positive feedback was received from the beneficiaries and based on it, the beneficiaries gained skills that would help them as they progress in their lives.

The founders’ reflections included:

I have learnt that I navigate failure positively. I tend to think of ways I can better my experience and work on a way to do better the next time I am given the same opportunity again. I take my failure as a lesson and a way to work on myself.

Zena Matenga

I had a very hard time accepting and most importantly embracing failure. That was the most important thing I had to unlearn throughout my journey. I had to accept that I’m only human and I should embrace my failure and learn from it instead of beating myself up about it.
