Stoic Quote of the Week
Have I done something for the general interest? Well, then, I have had my reward.
-Marcus Aurelius
What I learned this week:
Helping others is our true purpose in life. Nothing is more important than living our lives in the service of others. One of my favorite Anthony Robbins quotes is, “Living is giving.” I think about that quote often, and it comes into play in all of my business decisions. How will this effort help others? What will someone gain who joins this program? Those questions are key to developing any business. Just because you think it is great and are in love with it doesn’t mean it is the same for others. 95% of what we do is intangible. That means that there is no direct correlation to a bottom line. Better leaders make companies and organizations better, but that doesn’t mean that you can point to someone and say that we have increased revenue by 15% because he is a better leader. It doesn’t work that way. When someone takes charge of their life and lives with intention in pursuit of their purpose, there is no direct tie to their bank account. It turns back to culture and personal attitude. If your business has a thriving culture of innovation and success, then the probability is there to have greater growth. But there is no direct connection between happiness gained and revenue growth. The same holds true for you as an individual; if you are happy, then the money in your bank account isn’t important. In the end, all we can do is believe that we are helping others to have more, do more, and be more, whether they know it or not. I know that what I do and say will some time, some where, be seen by someone, and it will make a difference for them.
“When the student is ready. The teacher will appear.”
-Lao Tzu
Planning thought of the week:
Whenever you write a plan, you remove the ambiguity of what you want to happen. As a leader, your plan should give just the right amount of details. There is a balance between go forth and do it and a step-by-step list of instructions. The best plans allow leeway for the doers to have flexibility and decision authority in the moment for performance. Don’t tell me how to suck the egg, tell me that the egg needs sucking.
Business idea I heard about or thought of:
Seth Godin shared this idea in one of his blogs, and it was simple enough to implement that I should share it. An AI-enabled app on our phone that helps us track our medical conditions. I attempted to do something like this without an app a few years ago as a pain tracker. This isn’t just a pain log like I did. This is an app that interacts with you and helps you track conditions and asks follow-on questions as you enter the data to track. That isn’t too innovative. What makes this idea innovative is the system change that comes along with it. The app is tied to your doctor, who can review the data prior to and during your appointment. This is a system change because now, instead of the doctor asking you a bunch of questions and testing your memory in a 15-minute appointment, the doctor has the data and can ask specific clarifying questions based on the data in the app. The doctor can also refute what the AI may be recommending or even direct the AI to a different diagnosis. The hard part about this tool isn’t the creation of it, which I am sure is already going on. It is the change in our healthcare system and our culture of healthcare. That is the long pole in the tent. If you want to read the entire blog, here is the link: 16 Minutes.
There are two slots open for the inaugural Steel Men Tribe. If you want to be part of this small, tight-knit tribe of men changing the world, go to Steel Men Tribe and schedule a call to see if you are a fit.
Veteran opportunity of the week:
You need to watch this 90-second video of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs squashing rumors of benefit cuts and sharing personal information. This is leadership. Do not let rumors run rampant in your organization. The best way to do that is, to tell the truth and not keep what is happening behind the curtain. Here’s the link to the video: VA Secretary.
Someone I met this week:
Nothing is better than returning to my old stomping grounds at 10th SFG (A). Every time I go on the compound memories swell from packing out in the team room to long runs into the training area on tank trails to pre-jump training in cold crappy weather. Guess what? That’s what was happening when I was there, pre-jump training in the cold, windy, snowy weather. ?Of all the things that I miss, that isn’t one of them! I will report to all my fellow brothers of the Regiment that the health of the Regiment is good. The men and women of the Originals are doing well and going strong.
