What is an insurance Unicorn?

I'm happy you asked! Insurance Unicorn is someone who has been in the field as an insurance professional and then shifted to tech / software development. This particular person has been through the ringer when it comes to the customer experience, (front end and/or back end) and woke up one day and said

"Bro... there has to be a better way to do this"

So this elusive, majestic son of a gun, took upon themselves to learn software development. Salesforce, Apex code, Python, Java,

D) All the above!

This shiny, beautiful specimen of a human took their anger, and pure disgust for the status quo and emerged into the world as a beautiful Insurance Unicorn!

What are the average characteristics of an insurance Unicorn, you ask?

My god! You are asking great questions today!

Average Insurance Unicorn description:

  • They usually created (from scratch) to create a beautiful AMS system for their company / agency / brokerage
  • They learned the Salesforce system like a pro
  • They took responsibility when it came to admin roles
  • They worked long hours without any recognition from C level employees
  • Unicorns usually paid for their own training and certifications (blows my mind)
  • They consistently train new employees on the system THEY created (from scratch) without addition compensation
  • They still process claims and perform BA duties for new business in the same day.

They are basically all around bad asses of the insurance world.

Now... how do you get a Unicorn to come work for you?

Another great question! In my experience, you have to have the following to get the elusive unicorn to jump to your world

Things your company needs to lure the majestic Insurance Unicorn

  • A healthy work culture: I don't mean a company that says, "We care about your mental health!" And then make you go work in an office! When you know very damn well, they can work perfectly fine at home! A flexible working environment is just the tip of the iceberg. You should have great benefits, get coaching sessions, great structure around accountability for all employees and a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion and belonging. Without these factors in place, your unicorns will be grazing in better pastures sooner than you can say, "Can we talk about your performance?"
  • Play, Purpose and Potential: They have to have a healthy balance of each! They have to have purpose to their job (like, everyone has too!) They have to have fun when they work! (DUH) and they have to have the ability to grow and stretch their long majestic legs! They of course shifted from the customer experience to tech development! So expect them to want consistent growth.
  • PAY ?? THEM ?? WHAT ?? THEY ?? ARE ?? WORTH: You guyz.... these angelic beautiful relics of the human race need to paid what they are worth. They have up'ed their game in soooo many ways. Pay them what they are worth and give them the opportunity to grow and build on their own career.
