Serving the Plumbing, HVAC, and Mechanical Insulation Industry for over 19 years!
Calcium silicate?is the?chemical compound?Ca2SiO4, also known as calcium?orthosilicate?and is sometimes formulated as 2CaO·SiO2. It is also referred to by the shortened trade name Cal-Sil or Calsil. As previously mentioned, it occurs naturally as the mineral?larnite.
Calsil for the purpose of insulation is comprised of a mix of amorphous silica. lime, and some reinforcing fibers. A few other additives are put in, along with water to mix into a slurry. Which is then heated to a boil and poured into molds. While still wet, the pieces are placed into an indurator (like a steam pressure cooker) for several hours. This is where the chemical reactions form calcium silicate. Finally, the pieces are placed into a drying oven, taken out when ready, and trimmed.
The use of Calcium Silicate insulation the way we know it today started at the end of 1972 in North America. Prior to that, it had been reinforced with asbestos.
Insulation Components Inc. Calcium Silicate Insulated iShields prevent pipe insulation crushing and maintain insulation integrity at pipe hanger locations.
