Instrumenting AI to produce revenue for your business: The Bloom Journey
James Charlesworth
Building autonomous revenue systems to grow revenue for our customers with AI.
As a customer, when I need clarity, I want to speak to an expert who can promptly solve my problems. For all other needs, I prefer on-demand and real-time interactions. I want the product, service, or brand to understand my context and add value accordingly. Spotify exemplifies this for me; the product improves the more I use it, which is every day. I also love Anthropic , OpenAI and AI at Meta . These products are magical and have changed my life on a daily basis.
As a CEO, I want answers now. I want actions now. I want to reduce customer acquisition costs (CAC) and increase revenue growth rates. I want team alignment now. I want my teams to find their flow focusing on their craft, such as designing and engineering products or serving customers to drive outcomes with our products. AI and automation, when implemented with a customer-first mindset, can cut across teams and solve many problems accurately. It can deliver real-time customer experiences and revenue growth, allowing humans to focus on tasks that only they can perform. It can create flow.
As the founder and CEO of Bloom, I have spent over 25 years at the intersection of customers, content, data, automation, and revenue operations. Having navigated multiple waves of technological change—from the rise of the internet and the disruption of media to the explosion of SaaS apps and the launch of the iPhone—I have witnessed first hand how these shifts redefine industries and business paradigms.
The internet revolutionized media, but left traditional models scrambling to adapt. As a young executive managing revenue operations for a $6 billion diversified media company, I experienced the front lines of these disruptions. I remember the board's reluctance to acquire a real estate portal for $90 million AUD, only to see that company soar to a valuation of $18 billion while our business wasted away. The world has changed dramatically, often in unexpected ways, and it feels like we're on the cusp of another seismic shift. Today, we stand on the brink of what I believe will be the most significant disruption yet: the advent of artificial intelligence (AI).
AI is now transforming customer experience, marketing, sales, and operations, yet many are unaware of the profound impact and future potential of this change. CEOs now need to clearly define and articulate their vision, mission, values, and behaviors in a way that enables AI to help build and scale their companies, develop their teams, and better serve their customers.
The Convergence of Marketing and Sales
The convergence of marketing and sales is inevitable as AI transforms the landscape, enabling real-time, personalized interactions across every channel. Historically, marketing has relied on broadcasting static messages to vast, segmented audiences, a method rooted in cost-effectiveness rather than precision. However, AI is revolutionizing this paradigm, allowing for mass 1:1 engagements that blur the lines between marketing and sales.
It is now feasible to deploy millions of virtual AI sales companions. These agents engage consumers in their preferred manner—via chat, phone, video, or personalized ads. They speak every language, understand cultural nuances, and provide tailored pitches that resonate on an individual level. This AI-driven approach transforms marketing and sales into a dynamic, personalized experience, akin to having a dedicated sales team for each consumer.
As AI seamlessly integrates with event-driven automation tools, the potential for real-time, contextual interactions becomes boundless. Marketers will be able to generate personalized experiences that optimise to each consumer's journey in real time. This evolution marks the end of generic mass marketing and the painful sales dance between buyers and sellers. It marks the dawn of an era where every customer interaction is bespoke, intelligent, and deeply engaging.
The next generation of revenue production will be characterized by millions of one-on-one conversations, each meticulously crafted to build trust and drive conversions. This shift not only enhances customer experience but also drastically reduces the cost and complexity of planning, creating, and executing work. As AI continues to advance, the distinction between marketing and sales will dissolve, ushering in a new era of hyper-personalized, efficient, and effective consumer engagement.
Autonomous Revenue Operations of the Future
Running revenue operations in the future with AI will be akin to piloting an autonomous fighter jet or utilizing Full-Self Driving (FSD) on a Tesla. These operations will be guided and optimized by humans but driven by engines and decisions that are self-learning and self-optimizing. AI will continuously analyze vast amounts of data in real-time, making instant adjustments to strategies and tactics based on evolving market conditions, customer behaviors, and competitive landscapes. This dynamic approach will ensure that every decision and action is optimized for maximum impact, efficiency, and effectiveness. Human operators will focus on strategic oversight, providing high-level guidance and making critical decisions when necessary, while the AI-driven system handles the complexities and intricacies of day-to-day revenue operations, learning and improving with each interaction. This convergence of human intelligence and autonomous AI will revolutionize revenue operations, making them more agile, responsive, and capable of driving sustained growth and success.
