Can you describe a particularly impactful moment when you saw an adult learner achieve significant growth or understanding in your class?

I was explaining how to process Physician orders to the class and I recall the moment I saw one of the students eyes light up and her body language completely changed to what I read to say "I get it" , this was later confirmed when that student came to my office hours and thanked me my explanation and she stated it was that one way of explaining that was her 'ah ha' moment and has changed her entire understanding of how to process orders.? Little does that student know, she gave me way more than I could ever have given her!

In what ways do you incorporate real-world relevance and practical application into your instruction?

Stories!! If I can give a story as an example, especially a funny one, that is how I can keep students engaged and telling a story gives the students context, which leads into creating a memory. When the students have that memory; they easily recall the story rather than the words on a page.

Can you share an example of a time when feedback from students or colleagues prompted you to adjust your teaching techniques?

I do not have one single incident of this. I believe that this is ongoing and forever changing...we Instructors need to adjust our teaching techniques based on our student's way of learning. In my class, I start by asking every student what works best?for your learning needs and/or feedback on how I have taught up to that time. I look for the feedback that works?best for the majority?of students. However, I am still mindful of students whose needs are different?than the majority. In these instances, I would explain the material in two different ways, one may be visual for those visual learners and the other may be documentation only. This may result in my having to change my power points at the last minute to accommodate the class but I find this to be a necessary change to maintain a student focused classroom.

About Lanette:

About me: I am one of 7 children who were raised in a home of parents who encouraged us all to continue our education after high school. I struggled with what to choose for my post-secondary education. Choosing a career was daunting on me, I did not know what path to take and then worried about taking the wrong path. I recall my parents saying to me that any education you take will not be a wrong path, you will either be on the path that is right for you, or it will lead you to the path that is right for you.? So, in 1995 I registered at UFCV? (the previous name) in the NUC program.??

I went on to work in healthcare as a NUC, during that time, I married my husband, and we raised our 2 daughters. Our eldest daughter is a UFV alumni, and our youngest daughter is currently at UFV. All those years of raising our family, I had to opportunity to watch my mom, Heather Hurtubise,? who was an instructor at UFV.? Watching how rewarding this was for her,? tutoring those students who struggled and needed a little bit of extra help, and then seeing how that came full circle to those same students working alongside me in health care and the profound impact they had to our healthcare team, I quickly realized I too wanted to be a part of this.?
