What are Instructional Strategies?
Every teacher should know the answer to the following three questions:
1. What am I going to teach?
- the topic or theme of the lesson or learning cycle
2. Why am I going to teach this?
- the reason or explanation of why this is important to the learner
3. How am I going to teach this?
- the pedagogical approach used to deliver the curriculum to the class.
This post is about the "HOW" of teaching - aka the instructional strategy, you will be using in the classroom to guide the learning process.
Instructional strategies are techniques teachers use to help students become independent, strategic learners. These strategies become learning strategies when students independently select the appropriate ones and use them effectively to accomplish tasks or meet goals.
The list of 49 instructional strategies, or approaches, adapted with the teacher working groups of the Washoe County School District is an excellent overview to use when planning and designing for online and face-to-face learning experiences.
The list explains each strategy/approach and related strategies/approaches where applicable.
