ADDIE and the Instructional Design Process

ADDIE and the Instructional Design Process

There are a number of instructional design models but most of these models contain the following five essential phases in the acronym ADDIE, which stands for: * Analysis * Design * Development * Implementation * Evaluation

I made this video about 10 years ago, so my video making skills have come a long way since this time. And ironically, I now use the SAM methodology more than ADDIE. The tech sector lends itself to more agile development methodologies like SAM, since it helps you deliver content faster than traditional cascading water fall processes like ADDIE.

However, the information in the video is still a great primer on Instructional Design, and great introduction for those individuals who are just getting into the field of education. And this video has become one of the most watched YouTube videos on this topic.

From an academic/scholarship perspective, Instructional Systems Design (ISD) is a process technology. A technology is an applied science. ISD is an Educational Technology. Specific models like ADDIE aside, the idea of Instructional Design is to apply an applied science research design that will produce reliable results. Fundamentally, ISD is about engineering performance outcomes. How do you do that? Among other things it's important to precisely define the problem that needs to be solved. Is it a problem that's best solved by an educational or training solution? Make a mistake at that level and the performance outcome won't be guaranteed. What instructional strategies and tactics are the best enablers of the stated performance outcomes? ISD is an analytic field. The best Instructional Systems Designers are Instructional Psychologists.

Agree, often difficult to convince companies end-to-end time spent will deliver full benefits. However, the pitfalls of taking shortcuts are quite apparent when the end result yields less than desired outcomes. I am a dedicated ADDIE girl!

I use it all the time! Missing a step (especially Analysis) will often cause issues later.

I believe many companies try, but the issue of time causes interruptions. It is possible to keep the core of ADDIE methodology in your Training processes - even with a minimum of time available. Using the methodology yields a much better product in the end!
