The Institute for Security and Technology: Ransomware Task Force

Okay, there are a lot of good people protecting the country, and the world, in ways where government needs help. The Institute for Security and Technology really helps out in a number of areas.

The deal is that a dedicated, long-standing group of people might have access to different rules of engagement, and different support networks, than others might have.

In the US, we need a lot more people working on ransomware, where bad actors, often state-supported, seek to destabilize our democracy by disrupting institutions like schools, hospitals, and local governments.

Their Ransomware Task Force is a really big deal, helping protect us all.

As new technologies present humanity with unprecedented capabilities, they can also pose unimagined risks to global security. The Institute for Security and Technology’s (IST) mission is to bridge gaps between technology and policy leaders to help solve these emerging security problems together.

Some of its successes have taken the form of named initiatives: IST’s Ransomware Task Force, a coalition of key stakeholders across industry, government, and civil society, aims to innovate new solutions, break down silos, and find effective new methods of countering the ransomware threat.

Other successes, like the Digital Cognition and Democracy Initiative (DCDI), focused on convening: DCDI gathered over 50 practitioners, researchers, and technologists to understand how digital technologies affect human cognition and what those effects mean for democracy.
