INSTEAD OF BEING OVERCOME BY EVIL, WE SHOULD STRIVE TO OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD!
The passage, ‘Do not take revenge’ (Romans 12:19 NIV), reminds us that, though the thought of, ‘An eye for an eye’ as a way of settling issues may sound harsh to us, it was an enormous step forward in the ancient legal world, where powerful people could kill for the slightest injury, because though the law limited retribution by teaching proportional justice, it still left us with the problem of how to avoid the temptation to respond with an eye ‘plus-a-little-something-extra’. In other words, when it is our turn to respond, we always tend to inflict more pain than we received. So let the knowledge that: 1) God alone can answer the question of how much those who hurt us should pay back in return; 2) Rather than take revenge on others, we should leave room for His wrath, because it is His responsibility to avenge and He will repay equally; and 3) Instead of being overcome by evil, we should strive to overcome evil with good; teach you, in other to heap burning coals on your enemy, to feed him if hungry and give him something to drink, if thirsty!FG. www.fgtalks.com
