This is the fifth instalment of the 'Nudges in the Wild' series. In this series I share examples of where the design of our environment may be nudging desirable behaviour. We may even uncover some potential unintended consequences of poor design.
We're used to seeing the sign below, but let's take a moment to reflect the purpose of this signage.
The Breakdown
1. Inclusion. Displaying multiple languages can offer useful information for non-English speakers and those travelling from aboard. It navigates these individuals, as well as English speakers, to the desired goal of connecting to wifi.
2. Symbols. The use of the wireless / wifi symbol, and its variants, conveys a (largely) widely understood and shared meaning. Symbols are an important tool to convey information and instructions, particularly when there are language barriers.
3. Salience. The simplicity can allow the message to capture the attention of passersby. The use of colour (blue) and different font sizes draws our attention to important information, which can lead to reading the finer print if it is of relevance.
4. Assistance. Instructions to seek technical support is shown, as well as details around the accessibility of this assistance.
