Installing large concrete structures safely using GroundWorks
Calgary’s shoring branch at the CAT Rental Store was contacted recently by a major contractor; one of our regular users of shoring for a solution to a tricky problem at a high profile project with the City of Calgary.
They had to install a very large, modular chamber at the bottom of an excavation roughly 7.3M/24’ deep, and were unable to slope at the back of their excavation, due to a property line. Complicating matters was they had a large diameter concrete pipe that had to come in at the side and be connected to the chamber.
Working closely with the project team, we assisted with the development of a plan to use two large three sided stacked cages with dimensions of 24’ Deep x 16’ Long x 20’ Wide, utilizing our newest 10’ x 16’ End Panel on the side to allow the large concrete pipe to enter. The GroundWorks supplier produced a CAD drawing in advance for the contractor team to review and make sure the solution suited their needs.
Constructing a trench box like this using traditional steel trench boxes would have been impossible and would have required a slide rail system from any other supplier which would have been significantly more expensive and taken a lot longer to assemble & install. Plus, slide rail is a lot heavier requiring much larger lifting equipment.
The contractor, engineers & City were very pleased with the solutions that were provided and the speed of response from the entire shoring team. We continue to invest into products and services that deliver better solutions for our customers. Next time you have a difficult shoring challenge, please call me. Thanks Simon (587-586-6617).
