Installing Composite Decking on Concrete

3 Tips for Installing Composite Decking on Concrete

Did you know that one of the most common materials used for patios or backyard living spaces is concrete? Many homebuilders create concrete slabs rather than wood posts because they’re easy to install and are more budget friendly. It’s one of the reasons why we’re asked if you can install composite decking over concrete.

The good news is that you can, and the experts at Envision have shared three key tips that will help you turn a concrete slab into a beautiful outdoor living space.

1. Inspect the Concrete Thoroughly

Before any composite decking boards are installed, you need to complete a detailed inspection of the concrete slab. The first goal is to assess whether the surface is even. Most concrete slabs have small rises and/or dips that can directly impact the stability of a deck substructure. Use a laser level to examine the entire space and be sure to mark any spot that’s more than an 1/8 of an inch off. For any problem areas, you can use a concrete leveling mixture to smooth them out.

Speaking of smooth concrete, you’ll also want to be on the lookout for any cracks or holes, or if a section of the slab is sinking into the ground. Repair problem areas and ensure the concrete is smooth and level. It’s important to remember that you can use 2x4s to level out the concrete. Any aesthetic issues caused by repairing and leveling the concrete will be covered up by the deck.

2. Build a Substructure for the Composite Decking

A substructure is required on the concrete upon which to install composite decking. A substructure is important because it can provide proper drainage and airflow and help ensure the composite deck boards aren’t under any additional stress.

In many situations when you’re building a deck, 2x4s shouldn’t be used since they have too much flexibility and can create bounce when walked on. This isn’t a concern when installing composite decking on a concrete slab; the rigid, hard nature of the concrete will absorb the weight of the deck instead of the substructure.

When you’re installing?composite decking?the spacing between the boards needs to be a minimum of 1/8th?an inch apart. The butt joints of the deck boards also need to be staggered. It helps to install a sister joist at the butt joint for a greater fastening area.

3. Use Hidden Fasteners to Install the Composite Decking

For composite decking installed over concrete, proper gapping between the boards is essential to create the necessary space for water drainage while accommodating the expansion and contraction of the joists. Hidden fastener systems have screws that install in the gaps of the composite deck boards, ensuring consistent spacing while providing for a clean aesthetic.
