It’s time to hop in!? The trend is on and I bet you are ready to plunge into the short video content trend. But wait a minute, you’re stuck somewhere and can’t go from there. Are you not sure whether to start using Instagram Reels or Tiktok for your business’ video content? Then good thing you found us because we’ll take a dive into the difference between the two!
Instagram Reels
In late 2019, Instagram introduced Reels to its users. This feature allows Instgrammers to record short videos with 15-second durations with music, audio, editing tools, and post them not just on Instagram, but on different social media platforms as well. But what is its difference to IG Stories? Well, during its launch in Brazil, people who tested it wanted to share it with their followers and other people and wanted to make it last longer and be posted wherever it is accessible permanently. In response to this, Instagram created a particular space wherein Reels will be posted for users to share to their feeds.
TikTok
On the other hand, the so-called social media giant as of today, Tiktok, started out as three different apps. Musical.ly, which was launched in 2014, ByteDance in 2016 bought Musical.ly and expanded under a new brand, which is now successfully known as Tiktok. Tiktok then is a platform to share short-length video that lasts up to 15-60 seconds and is the fastest growing social media app.?
So what’s the difference?
Regardless of how many followers you have on TikTok, your video can go viral and be discovered by thousands or even millions of people. Even though you do not have that many followers, if your video content is interesting, it will gain exposure and can go viral, and will potentially help your platform growth. This is because TikTok allows users with a small number of followers to still be discovered in the “For Your Page” wherein lots of different people can discover your video, even it has little engagement or even if you have a small number of followers.?
On the other hand, Instagram Reels will help you at least double the number of your views that your Instagram posts or content normally do. However, your Reel only has a chance to go viral when you are featured in Explore which Instagram chooses top show to people.?
2. Video Length and Editing
Tiktok allows users to record videos that last up to 60 seconds, and Instagram allows up to 30 seconds only. Likewise, Tiktok allows users to use the app like an editing app wherein you can upload and edit videos that are already shot. You can also change the arrangement of videos, unlike on Instagram. Tiktok has voice-overs,? which is popular in storytelling style, but Instagram Reels doesn’t. Therefore, Tiktok has more editing options.

3. Filters
Both Tiktok and Reels offer filters, but it is limited on Reels wherein you can only choose one filter because the effects are not separated. Also, you only are allowed to select an effect or filter before creating your video. On the other hand, TikTok has different filters or video effects wherein users can customize their videos, and it offers expansive varieties that you can choose from. Users can apply video effects even after taking videos.
4. Captions Character Limit
When you will post Reels, you will be allowed with the standard Instagram caption character count which is 200 characters. Tiktok on the other hand only limits up to 100 characters per caption. Given this, TikTok videos must really be valuable even without the captions to support it. Likewise, comments also are limited which is also limited.?
5. Advertising
Similar to Instagram Stories, advertising with Reels are full screen and vertical in form and appears in between reels. People can also comment, view, like, and save these ads, which are visible in the Reels tab, Explore, and on Instagram feed. Moreover, TikTok only allows progressive brands to advertise and partner up with them. However, brands can still directly partner up with influencers. They can use hashtag challenges, brand effects, brand takeover ads, or top-view ads to advertise.?
?So what’s in it for your business?
Given these differences, the best platform for you to use still relies on your intent and purpose of using the two. Instagram Reels will be the best place to reach out to your existing audience and entertain them better. On TikTok, you will have to start off as a new user to build a presence, but all it takes for you to gain an audience is to be interesting and impress users.?
As a business owner, remember that you don’t have to be everywhere all the same time. All you have to do is to select one and master it, thrive in it, and be discovered by your audience there.?
