With Instagram’s monthly active users of 1.082 billion, the social platform persists on dropping a bomb for its competitors, as the community will be introducing a new feature to the public. This is not a secret anymore as the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, already made a video announcement via Instagram and Twitter, and wrote in his post: “At Instagram we’re always trying to build new features that help you get the most out of your experience. Right now we’re focused on four key areas: Creators, Video, Shopping, and Messaging.”
But, this is not the peak of the mountain just yet— the spotlight is that Instagram is no longer the square photo sharing app as described by Mosseri. And these are the reasons behind:
For Creators:
During the recent years, the careers of creators have boomed in the economy and with this, the Instagram community certainly grabbed this opportunity to bring more power that has shifted from institutions to individuals into the platform. Making this key area one of the said focuses of building Instagram’s new features, for it to lead in this factor and play a crucial role. Platforms like Instagram clearly are among those who experiment their way into monetizing the experiences of the content creators, who cause the expansion and growth of the platform.
Shopping
The Covid-19 pandemic has contributed greatly in the choice of shoppers to resort to online shopping. Even though over the years, the E-commerce industry has been accelerating, the Instagram community wanted to “lean into that trend” as it will focus as well in online shopping, coming up with features that will provide convenience.
Messaging
For people to stay connected despite the distance and the “social distancing:” practice that again, the pandemic has generated, the way people connect has changed. And so, Mosseri has moved from stories and feed to messaging, for the sake of a better way of connecting.

Video
Next to Facebook, Youtube is the second most popular social media site, and it dominates the content-sharing industry. And just recently, TikTok also grew its popularity among the majority, and its success has been loudly shared with the whole world, making it one of the major platforms as well. Mosseri has acknowledged this as tough competition in the space, giving the Instagram community the enthusiasm to more experiments that will allow it to be more progressive in the video-sharing key area.?
This is the primary reason why Instagram will no longer be a photo sharing app anymore only, for it will be a video-sharing app, with more exclusive features than Tiktok or Youtube.
Moreover, features that Instagram newly built includes the “Suggested Posts” that hand out more recommendations and more chances of being discovered by other users. A full-screen video content will also be launched. And of course, the most awaited: the Instagram Reels.?
Instagram Reels enables you to record, edit, and share 3-30 second videos in 9x18 portrait mode. With this, you can film in the app itself and then upload, do an audio attribution, stitch videos together, reupload your own videos, and share these to your feed, where it has a separate section. As per Mosseri, people come to Instagram to be entertained, and with the community’s latest experiments and sample innovation, they really do their part in keeping the people entertained.?
In the business world, competition never really gets out of style. This not only has an impact on social media platforms, but it greatly impacts the lives of people as well.
?Instagram is no longer the square photo sharing app, it is a more creative, more popular, and more useful social media app.
