Hmmm… If you would have asked me this question before the Facebook scandal, I would have had a different answer. I would say they both have great placements for different business types. However, hands down for most products Instagram is the spot to jump in the playground. If you already have a list of 1500+ buyers are sign ups, then you may can start with Facebook as you already have data to create a sizable audience similar to those who purchased or opted in to your service. Digital marketing is all about behaviors, you need your audience to take action so that Google and Facebook can find similar people to go after.
If you do not have a list here is a tip that I use to get this going…
One trick that I use in order to receive organic traffic at an affordable rate is to build out data events for Facebook by paying a (LEGIT) Instagram Influencer in your niche market. For example, if your product is health and beauty you would hire an Instagram Influencer that has a following that speaks to that audience.
The cost is a lot lower to begin with rather than running test ads on Facebook while spending thousands of dollars to find 50-500 desirable behaviors (purchase and sign up behaviors) to build on.
You used to only need 50 events to optimize for conversions however since October 16th Facebook is now asking that at least 500 people display the behaviors that you want inside of your funnel in order to effectively optimize for conversions.
Using the Instagram method, you can get a boost of organic behavior that you can use for paid advertisements on Facebook. The same applies for Google… Have your data infrastructure in place no matter what platform you start with. By doing this you can re-target and create audience algorithms organically and scale immediately with paid advertisements while cutting your cost.
I am not sure if you understood any of the above, but it is a golden formula, this I promise.
