Inspiring Positive+Impact
I am often asked if writing my book was a good experience. I've never written a book before so I found it difficult for sure. Two things have made the whole thing worth it.
Firstly, the speaking invitations have been tremendous. I'm especially excited about the next one where I'll be presenting and launching my book at the American Society for Association Executives conference in Cleveland and then flying to Peelee Island to keynote a Breakout Breakout session hosted by Destination Canada.
Secondly, I've been contacted by people all across North America who were inspired by my book and are putting it into practice. I was particularly encouraged by this blog post written by Alycia Drube who developed her Purpose, Vision, Mission, and Values statements for her new business to support events to become sustainable.
Alycia writes that while reading How We Gather Matters , she was "really inspired by the breakdown of the different company ethos statements." She shares that she hates the process of writing such statements. "I always thought it was SO DUMB" she shares. "I can’t distill what I need people to know that way and I could never wrap my head around the formulas."
BUT Alycia was inspired by the guidelines in my book. "It compelled me into action!" she proclaimed. She decided to try out the recommended approach to see if it would work for her company called Positive+Impact Event Consulting and her clients.
Here is Alycia's summary of my descriptions:
“Your purpose defines why your event and organization exist, beyond financial gain…
"Your vision… describes where you want to arrive, or a future state…
"Mission statement communicates what you will do to arrive at your vision, including specific initiatives or tactics...
"Your values represent how you want to behave in order to achieve your mission...
"In combination, your purpose, vision, mission, and values should articulate the positive impact your event aims to make for society."
"I found that breakdown SO EMPOWERING.
I think it’s a great exercise for every business and the board of every event."

Here's the end result Alycia came up with...
Purpose:
At Positive+Impact Event Consulting my purpose is to raise the event industry’s baseline expectations of planning and executing events of all sizes regarding all facets of sustainability: environmental, social, health, economic; starting with the Seattle market.
Vision:
With Positive+Impact Event Consulting my vision is to move the event industry players who feel disempowered by the state of the environment and current standard practices into a position of leadership and positive+impact.
Mission:
The mission of Positive+Impact Event Consulting is to give event businesses the tools and support to change their systems, practices and habits so they are making positive impact automatically; prepare them with the knowledge and skills to lead both clients and partner businesses into a more positively impactful future through collaboration and education; and support my community to share their progress as a tool to attract more of the ambitious and values focused clients as a result of values first marketing.
Values:
Positive+Impact Event Consulting will work from an education first model, avoid shame and guilt as motivation, and lead by example. One example: money talks- I will support causes I believe in as a fundamental part of my financial structure by donating through 1% ftp, contributing 1% of my annual sales to an environmental organization, plus for each individual consulting client I will donate 1% of my fee to a cause that represents my clients’ values.?These numbers may seem small but it represents my motto of “Better is better” 1% to your preferred cause is better than the nothing they were going to receive.
What do you think of Alycia's Purpose, Vision, Mission, and Values statements? Do you have an approach that you've found helpful or is this something you are currently wrestling with? Let me know if this is a helpful guide for you and pick up a copy of my book for more insight into wading into purposeful work that leads to a sustainable impact.
