Inspiring Others Despite Tragic Loss
Hampton Roads Transit
Mission: To connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient, and sustainable.
Libra Dixon is a self-proclaimed “yes” woman. She doesn’t like to tell anyone “No.” If her coworkers need her, she’s there to help. If her supervisors need anything, they know Libra Dixon is the one to call. Hampton Roads Transit’s customers know it too. Customer Service Manager, Richard Williams describes Dixon as not only reliable but, “an inspiring team player who keeps her co-workers motivated.”
Dixon has been a Customer Service Representative at HRT for nearly three years. She started at the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic. With more than 15 years in transportation, she’s a perfect fit for the job.
Dixon is no stranger to the streets of Hampton Roads. She spent years as a dispatcher. So, to say she knows the lay of the land is an understatement. Before coming to work at HRT, she spent two years at Virginia Premier dispatching medical transport. Prior to that she spent 13 years at MV Transportation. They provided paratransit services for HRT and Dixon was a driver for one year before becoming a dispatcher. Now, she keeps up her dispatching skills by working part time for Sentara a couple of nights a week.
However, most days you can find her at our Downtown Norfolk Transit Center or answering customer’s calls from 18th Street. She stays busy at DNTC helping riders figure out how to get to where they need to go, issuing bus tickets and ID’s and answering all kinds of questions.
When she’s not busy helping customers at the transit center, you’ll find her online, tackling concerns brought by passengers. Dixon prides herself on being a “problem solver.” She says, “I can’t promise them anything, but I try.” Williams says Dixon has a knack for making customers feel at ease. She can handle a frustrating situation with “a quick smile” and an “encouraging and empathetic attitude.”
Remarkable, considering how Dixon’s life was rocked by tragedy last July. Her husband Michael was shot and killed outside their home in Norfolk. He was trying to break up a fight when a man pulled out a gun. The couple met in middle school, more than 30 years ago, and they had just celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. Devastated by the loss, Dixon fills the void by working as much as she can. She says, “I just keep praying and keep moving.”
Right now, you can find Dixon filling in on the front desk at 18th Street. She says it’s given her an opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. If you’re ever over that way be sure to stop by and say hello. You can count on a quick smile and a warm welcome.?
