As we commemorate International Women's Day this year, the "Inspire Inclusion" theme resonates deeply with my experiences and beliefs. My journey has taught me that being excluded—not having a seat at the table by default—can be a powerful motivator if harnessed correctly. This realization doesn't imply acceptance of non-inclusive workplaces as the norm. Instead, it emphasizes the need for action.?
Growing up in India and moving to Singapore for college and then the United States for work and further studies, I found myself in several new environments where I was an outsider. I have had to navigate and overcome biases to gain a seat at the table which has given me an understanding of genuine inclusion. More importantly, it has taught me how to transform experiences of exclusion into a powerful catalyst for change.?
Acknowledging the biases in our work environments is the first step toward change. In sharing my insights and experiences, I hope to inspire others with the determination and strategies to confront, navigate, and ultimately succeed in their careers despite these challenges.?
Empowering Steps for Professional Growth?
- Know Your Superpowers: Early on, stereotypes like "Women aren't data-driven" held me back. I have also heard, "if you are data-driven you must not be creative". But instead of letting labels define me, I focused on what I do well. I honed my analytical skills, proving I could crunch numbers alongside the best of them. Working in start-up environments and in marketing I have learned that creativity and data-driven are not mutually exclusive, but rather mutually reinforcing. Leaning into both to craft data-driven stories that resonate with everyone has been crucial in my career. Think of this as discovering your superpowers and making them shine so brightly, no one can miss them.?
- Commit to Continuous Learning: In my career in investment banking, a mentor influenced my growth by ensuring I worked on projects aligned with my interests, like direct-to-consumer and ecommerce accounts, while emphasizing the importance of acquiring new skills. This kind of support and encouragement from someone invested in your success can be profoundly impactful. Seek opportunities and mentors who prioritize your development.?
- Choose Your Environment Wisely: Not every workplace or industry will recognize your worth. If a workplace or industry fails to value your contributions, it's time to move on. I've intentionally made difficult choices to leave organizations when I have felt my desire to learn, and grow was not fulfilled. Remember, the world is filled with opportunities—never settle for less than you deserve.??
- Cherish & Foster Inclusive Cultures: Throughout my career, I've cherished the workplaces that truly embraced inclusion. These environments fostered collaboration, innovation, and a sense of belonging – a powerful combination for success. Let's cultivate this same spirit within our teams. By actively promoting inclusion, we can create a supportive and growth-oriented culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best.
- Cultivate a Supportive Network: A big part of work is the people who make up the workplace. I've found that building a strong network of peers and positive workplace relationships unlocks a whole new level of success. That's why I make a conscious effort to nurture these relationships. It's not just about getting ahead; it's about creating a sense of belonging and support. A team that celebrates wins together and helps each other through tough times becomes truly resilient. It adds a whole new layer of meaning and joy to my daily work, and I believe it helps everyone grow both personally and professionally.?
- Seek Inspiration from Senior Women Leaders: Learning from the experiences and resilience of women leaders can light your path and inspire perseverance. Their willingness to take chances on others, as done for me later in my career, emphasizes the importance of paying it forward. When you see high potential in women within your organization, giving them opportunities can have a profound impact, just as it did for me.?
How Organizations Can Inspire Inclusion?
For organizations, the call to action is clear. Token diversity and inclusion statements are not enough. Real change comes from investing in women and embedding inclusive practices into the company's ethos.??
At Leaf Home, I'm proud of the culture we are building across all our teams and with the support of our DEI Community, Leaf Home Women's Committee, and Mentor Program, among other initiatives. These efforts create an environment where all employees, regardless of gender, can thrive. We're committed to continuous investment in our people through learning and development opportunities.?
Finding community and support within your organization can offer comfort and a sense of belonging. I encourage women to focus on the aspects of their work and workplace that bring joy and fulfillment. Embrace what makes you unique, build the supportive environment you deserve, and remember—progressing in your career is a marathon, not a sprint.??
The collective objective is clear – to inspire inclusion, to lead by example, and to lift as we climb. Let's use International Women's Day as a catalyst to rise above exclusion and pave the way for inclusion.?
