Inspiring a new generation of chemists

Johnson Matthey Chemical Products team has many talents, including the talent to inspire a generation of young women about the significance of science in our everyday life and help them discover the wonderful and fascinating world of physics, engineering and chemistry.

With the support of the Operations Director Elba Lizardi, our Quality Manager Ana Barrios-Sosa (West Deptford, USA) teamed together with Johnson Matthey colleagues from the Refining and Chemical Products (Jennifer Bennett, Alexis Imparato), Noble Metals (Gilda Naka) and ECT (Amanda Taylor) businesses to participate in the Annual Women in STEM Fair held at Rowan College Gloucester County, NJ, on March 14, 2016.

Johnson Matthey led six workshop sessions among fifteen other sponsoring companies to encourage over one hundred high school freshman and sophomore young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

One workshop titled "Colour, Candy, and Chemistry" helped students explore how color chemistry plays a role in different aspects of everyday life and taught students some fun chemistry “tricks” that are currently being used in the industry. Another workshop titled "Mixing It Up!"allowed students to perform hands-on experiments and explore the physical and chemical properties of different kinds of mixtures such as colloids, solutions, and suspensions.

Overall, the event was extremely successful and was featured on Channel 6 ABC Action News.
