INSPIRING MEN: Ben Marks
My first inspiring man was my father, the late great Ben Marks born 8/2/14 in Detroit, MI. And you all expected Moses, Abraham, Isaac or Jacob!
Born to two lovely gentle immigrant souls of eastern European descent, my father relocated to NYC in 1931 because there were no jobs in Detroit...sound familiar? He became a glazier like his father; working for a cousin who owned a glass shop in NYC.
My father was the warmest, funniest person I knew, he instructed me to laugh at myself before I laughed at anyone else and I do.
He taught me to operate an electric sewing machine: we made our share of wrap around skirts! To carve soap, create mini objets d'art out of egg shells, manipulate coaxial cables (being tossed at job sites) into beautiful sculptures, cut glass, to love language (he spoke English, Yiddish and German; self-taught in French as he served in WWII) and to always expand my vocabulary.
My father was unassuming to say the least; he loved his family and prized goodness and generosity.
Despite being a wounded union warrior of the gritty glazing/construction business of NYC which included installing windows and mirrors for the likes of Robert Motherwell, Joan Crawford and the best brands on Fifth Avenue, restaurants, hotels and Tower One of the WTC... He was my window on the world... transparency his MO.
His injuries rarely held him back... as he was highly responsible to his wife, daughters and parents.
Chain smoking was his only weakness, which led to his premature death from a brain aneurysm at 59.
