An Inspiring Fact You Might Not Know About The IDF

Known in Israel as the peoples' army, the IDF is the only defence force in the world that has truly embraced young adults with various special needs.

Founded by Major General Gabi Ophir, the head of the IDF's Home Front Command, whose daughter has Williams Syndrome, “Special in Uniform”, assisted by JNF USA, is a unique program that enables young men and women who are disabled, autistic (or have other syndromes) to serve their country.

The program today integrates over 800 young people with special needs in 60 IDF bases throughout the country.

Our CMO, Stacy Dotan, shares why we chose “Specials in Uniform” as an initiative we take part in as a group.

"Each year, we look for ways to give back to the community. When I heard about this incredible program, there was no doubt in my mind that we would adopt a unit and be a part of their incredible journey. As a mother with an autistic daughter, this is very close to my heart."

“Specials in Uniform” opens a whole new horizon for people with special needs, allowing them to experience a world that has been closed to them in the past, giving them a sense of belonging and exposing other soldiers to the special needs community.

Last month, our management, team employees and members of our advisory board, Mr. Moshe Ya'Alon, Former Israeli Defence Minister and Tal Russo, a Major General in the IDF, attended the ceremony to mark the graduation of our adopted units' basic training.

One of the recruits took the microphone and gave a speech that left most of the audience with tears in their eyes. "I was so excited last night I couldn't sleep; I am proud to be serving my country; I don't need a babysitter; I have a purpose".

Stacy continues, "I know what this day means to the parents sitting here today and those that will take their place in future programs; hope for their child's future, joy as they see their sons and daughters faces glowing with pride as they put on their disk tags and take their army berets." We are now the proud adoptees of a special unit; the ceremony marked the beginning of a five-year journey together, which we look forward to sharing with you.
