Inspiring employee engagement
Jeans for Genes UK
Wear your jeans, donate & transform the lives of people living with genetic conditions ??
In today's corporate landscape, many companies have experienced first-hand that engaging their employees in meaningful corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives not only benefits society but also boosts morale, productivity, and their overall company reputation. While raising funds for charities is essential, an effective, long-term CSR strategy should be about more than just providing financial donations. In this article, we’ll draw on our experience of working in partnership with businesses and share what we’ve learned about how employers can positively drive active employee involvement through CSR campaigns.?
Start with committing to a long-term partnership with a charity??
Instead of one-off initiatives to raise money, you could consider establishing a long-term partnership with a charity. Now, as a charity ourselves, you may be thinking this is an obvious point for us to make! But here’s the thing, it not only benefits the charity, but it also benefits the business. By committing to ongoing support and collaborating on sustained initiatives, companies radiate a genuine dedication to social responsibility, providing employees with a sense of continuity, purpose and most importantly trust in their employer to do the right thing. At Jeans for Genes, we’ve also found that our experience in delivering engaging initiatives has provided incredibly useful insights for our corporate partners. When you approach the relationship as a two-way partnership it strengthens the long-term impact and deepens employee engagement.?
Cultivate a purpose-driven culture??
To engage employees in CSR campaigns, cultivate a purpose-driven culture where employees can easily connect their work with meaningful social impact. To do this could involve aligning the company's values with the charity partner’s cause, embedding the success of the partnership into the company's overall mission and goals, and positively communicating the importance and impact of employee participation in philanthropic activities.?
Implement skills-based volunteer programs??
Many employees have unique skills that could really benefit the company’s charity partner. They could be hobbies, passions, primary or secondary careers that are often vital skills that charities need. By tapping into those talents through skills-based volunteer programs, employees can offer their expertise in areas such as photography, marketing, finance, social media or technology to help charities achieve things that may not usually be possible without extensive funding. This type of initiative not only showcases employees' talents but also nurtures a real sense of pride, happiness and professional growth.?
Recognise and celebrate employee contributions to CSR?
Recognition is an incredibly powerful motivator so acknowledging and celebrating employees' efforts and contributions to CSR campaigns can have a wonderful impact on their long-term commitment and engagement. Publicly recognising employees through internal communications, newsletters, or company-wide events can inspire others and cultivates a lovely culture of gratitude and camaraderie.??
Promote education and awareness??
Educating employees on a deeper level about the causes they support enhances their understanding and deepens their emotional connection to the partner charity. Employers can organise educational and awareness workshops, inviting speakers from charities to help employees understand more about the work that needs to be done and the impact their support will have. At Jeans for Genes, we’re proud to be connected to an incredible network of groups and charities through our annual event who provide phenomenal support to families across the UK who are living with genetic conditions. Being able to connect corporate partners with these groups is something we’re passionate about as we’ve seen first-hand how this can positively drive long-term relationships and deepen employee engagement.??

Incorporate remote and virtual opportunities??
In today's remote and hybrid work environments, offering virtual volunteering opportunities or creating virtual platforms where employees can contribute their skills or time to charities not only provides incredible support for charities, but also helps employees to feel connected to their colleagues and the wider company. Feeling part of something with tangible outcomes that drives positive social impact is an important part of helping remote or hybrid working employees to feel valued and engaged.?
Engage leadership and managers??
Leadership buy-in is crucial for strengthening employee engagement in CSR campaigns. Encourage senior executives and managers to lead by example, participate in charitable initiatives, and communicate the impact of CSR efforts to their teams. Their visible support and involvement can inspire and motivate the entire workforce.??
Encourage team collaboration??
Encouraging teamwork and collaboration in CSR initiatives enhances employee engagement. Organise cross-departmental or cross-functional teams to work on charitable projects together, promoting unity and building relationships across the organisation while making a collective impact.?

A multi-faceted approach can empower employees to actively engage in CSR campaigns on a deeper level, rather than just holding a fundraiser once each year. Of course, financial donations are critical for the longevity of charities, but a long-term CSR strategy with different themes is what really deepens employee engagement. When employees feel inspired they’ll be more likely to feel driven to make a positive difference in society. Together, employees and employers really can make a lasting impact on the world.?
