Inspiring day at Women Leaders' Summit
Geoff Lorigan CNZM
Founder and Advisory Board Chair at Institute for Strategic Leadership
I was greatly inspired by the high calibre women speakers today at the 'Aspiring Women Leaders' Summit' in Brisbane run by Queensland Health. All speakers were first class; in particular the Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, Anna Campbell, Liz Ellis, Kathleen Forrester, and Dr Liz Parry. The 1,000 women in the audience went home this evening encouraged by these great role models to be more courageous in applying for leadership opportunities and taking the step up.
Full credit to those who took the initiative to vision, plan, implement and MC this world class event and to the Premier for setting in place a number of development opportunities for women leaders.
Three of us from ISL ran a two and a half hour Strategic Leadership Workshop. I was also privileged to sit on the Q&A panel towards the end of the day with Fiannagh Dougan, Michael Walsh and Liz Ellis.
Liz Ellis, one of Australia's highest profile elite athletes and most successful netballers, reminded us all that we need to make a plan, see obstacles as opportunities, research world class performance metrics, set specific goals and dates for achieving them, and ruthlessly prepare to meet our goals - recognising that "good luck is when robust preparation meets opportunity".
A most rewarding day of learning from and with each other and another step towards reaching the much needed gender balance amongst senior leaders and chief executives.
