Against all odds…

Chelsea was born in Danville, California. The two-time defending World Champion gymnast was born with Down syndrome.

Doctors told her parents that she would have a low muscle tone among other things. And she didn’t learn to walk until almost the age of 2.

But she defied the stereotypes of her genetic disorder by showing a flair for sports at an early age.

Chelsea’s parents encouraged her by introducing her to many different sports. Even if she was born with Down Syndrome it didn’t become a hindrance in achieving her dreams. Now, she’s an international model and a multi-time champion of the Special Olympics. And she’s just getting started.

Career as an athlete…

At the age of 8, Chelsea began participating in various sports. She tried her hand at soccer, swimming, and gymnastics. And after trying different kinds of sports, gymnastics was the one that kept her interest.

Seeing their daughter’s passion for gymnastics they enrolled her in Special Olympics gymnastics training.

She worked with a coach named Dawn Pombo who helped Werner develop her skills.

She then competes in the first 2012 Special Olympics National Gymnastics Championships.

Werner got the National Championship that year. And is a 2X WORLD CHAMPION GYMNAST 4X SPECIAL OLYMPICS CHAMPION!

Road to becoming a model…

From gymnastics, Werner began modeling. Her first modeling job was at H&M and filmed in Havana, Cuba. Chelsea has since traveled and done quite a few campaigns. Such as Aerie, Tommy Hilfiger, Summersault Swimwear, Target, and more. Chelsea has even graced the cover of Teen Vogue and walked the ramp for New York Fashion Week.

She has conquered sports and fashion, so there’s no stopping Chelsea now. And the best part is that she is simply doing what she loves. Believing in her dreams and doing her best to achieve them.

Chelsea is just an epitome that no disability can be a hindrance to a person that is determined to achieve his or her dreams. She is an inspiration not only for people with disabilities but for all who are dreaming of becoming an athlete, a model, or anything that nothing is impossible when you work hard for it. And believing in yourself that you can achieve it.
