I took this picture of the TV screen at a client base in Mozambique after I caught the end of the Wimbledon Men's Singles Final yesterday. I felt moved to capture the moment and share an insight because I observed my own paradigm shift.
Novak Djokovic has earned a reputation for robotic reliability and relentless pursuit of invincibility. Carlos Alcaraz is a youngster who has barely played on grass. I expected Djokovic to enhance his already peerless reputation for consistency.
Instead it was Alcaraz who delivered on the day. Against the odds, he backed himself and bravely faced his childhood hero across the net for five hours of extraordinary competition.
What moved me to tears was the post match interview with Novak. I felt and saw that this robot, like all of us, is human. He acknowledged the new champion and then he looked up to the crowd and he saw his son. At this point he could no longer control his emotion. His mortality was unmasked. That vulnerability moved me and it moved the crowd.
Vulnerability is a sign of strength. It is a way to build connection and compassion. I have learned this the hard way but this shift by one of the greatest sportsmen of our time served as a point of inspiration for us all.

1 å¹´Fantastic post Tim, you are absolutely right. To maintain his level of athleticism over so many years, almost invincibility, demonstrates what a committed professional Novak has been. He has his critics but for anyone to excel at that level for so long is commendable. The old guard is beginning to move on and the young talent is now beginning to shine through. Let's hope those greats assist the development of others with their mentorship and coaching.

1 å¹´It is not often in sports that you get to see such a seismic shift from one generation to the next. I don't doubt that Novak will win a grand slam again but there is the sense that a new era has begun.
