An Inspirational Habit ?? ??

An Inspirational Habit ?? ??

Hope you’ve had a good week. ??

One of the things I’ve been wondering about this week is why I always seem to have a podcast on during my dog walks….

I walk around 1.5 to 2 hours a day, and during that time, I’m almost always plugged into something – whether it's a tennis podcast or a business one.

I’m sure mindfulness experts would say that this isn’t a good idea.

They’d say I should be walking in silence, focusing on every step and being in the present moment.

And I get that. It makes a lot of sense.

However, I actually find that podcasts are my way of filling up rather than draining myself.

My podcasts;

Keep Me Company ??

Having a podcast on while I walk is a bit like having someone’s voice in my ear, keeping me company.

It energizes me, just like a good Zoom call or a meaningful phone conversation would. There's something comforting about it.

Learning On the Go ???

I love that I’m learning as I walk. I’m getting inspired and picking up new insights while doing something I’d already be doing anyway! It's like adding an extra layer of productivity to my day.

Making the Most of My Time ???

I’ve got to walk Lily anyway, whatever the weather! I feel like I’m ticking off two boxes at once—getting my daily exercise and feeding my brain at the same time.

New Ideas ??

I get a ton of ideas when I’m listening. The only downside is that I can’t always capture them!

If I were at my desk, I’d jot them down immediately, but on a walk you can’t do that.

Affirming What I’m Doing ?

Sometimes, I’ll hear something on a podcast and think, “OK, I’m doing that’ It’s great to get that confirmation that I’m doing the right things in my business, even if I don’t always realize it.

Filling My Well ??

Podcasts don’t deplete my energy—they fill me up. They bring me fresh perspectives, new knowledge, and a lot of joy! ??

Expanding My Digital Network?

When I listen to interviews, I often discover new people I want to connect with.

I often end up signing up for their newsletter, checking out their website, or even buying their book.

It’s like my digital world expands just through these walks and listens.

All these things—whether it’s the company, the ideas, the learning—are great reasons to carry on ‘dogcasting’ ??

I do love a podcast - history, health, writing, productivity - and listen when I’m driving or doing housework. Never when I’m walking the dog as I actually want to be with him, not mentally elsewhere, as well as enjoying where I am and listening for cars on country lanes.

I probably don't listen to podcasts enough. The time I do listen to them is when I'm in the car alone. When walking the dogs, and particularly whilst I'm riding my horse, I allow my mind to wander. It's generally when I've had my best ideas. In fact, the idea for Trainers' Library was born 24+ years ago when out alone on the moors with my old horse (who I sadly lost two years ago). So, I'm in two minds. It's great to use the time to learn but it's so important, I think, to allow ourselves time to just think. To allow the brain to wander and make connections it's difficult to make in the mayhem of the day to day.

Me too! I love DDT, always inspirational and she encourages you to think differently. Sometimes it's lovely to sit in silence but other times I need the motivation of a podcast to get out for a walk.
