Inspiration Spotlight: Travis "Bunky" McFee

The late Travis “Bunky” Mcfee is co-founder Melissa Lahti’s grandfather. he also registered as nonviolent for religious reasons during WW2 and was sent to the frontlines by the American military to die as a result, instead he became a hero and inspiration for NEW MOON.

Travis got the nickname 'Bunky' by being the friendliest person in the bunks, a bluegrass musician back home & natural performer who was always eager to lift up peoples hearts. He made friends easily wherever he went and bootcamp was no different.

As a result we was assigned a prime position as a driver for the military elite, this is where he was serving on d day, driving the generals between encampments. During one of these runs he saw a dire situation where us soldiers were drowning of the coast because of being dropped too far into the water.

Thinking fast Travis started stripping the floatation materials off of the ground to water vehicles and throwing them into the water (first his own, then several). Through this simple act of quick thinking and innovation he was able to save many of his fellow soldiers lives.

Travis was wounded that day, shot in service, which he reports not to have felt in his determination to save as many people as possible. In a place where everyone was focused on killing “Bunky” found a way to fight war with peace. we reflect on his example daily for inspiration.
