Inspiration
For me, my inspirations are myriad – my family, prominent authors, teachers, coaches, and artists who actually scripted the movie in which I would act. It appears to me as a series of compelling episodes from which I learnt and moved ahead.
As a young Table Tennis Player, I remember witnessing the World Table Tennis Championships, 1975 in Kolkata (thanks to my late elder brother who was appointed the concierge for the Team from Macau). To watch the Swedish reigning champions Stellan Bengtsson and Kjell Johansson; and the mighty Zu Shaofa (from China) was a treat for the eyes and fuel for the player in me.
A few years later in the Inter College Championships (organised by the Bengal Table Tennis Association), I was part of my College Team which lifted the Trophy two years in a row (1982 and 1983) in the same Netaji Indoor Stadium where the !975 World Championships were played.
Passion
Passion was and always will be contagious, for me most definitely. I developed a lot of my passion to excel from my late grandfather (his values and penchant for academics) and then my late mother (her passion of acting). My conversations with my grandfather often led to more philosophical issues on life and living. His academic and professional achievements always held me in awe.
My mother’s dedication to her art and craft of the stage helped me develop the passion for getting into the details; and as my mother said, “Always be in Your Role.” Being in role or a role model is never easy unless you put yourself in the shoes of the character you are playing. Later in life, I leveraged the same values to get inside the shoes and souls of my customers who I served.
Today, I try to do that with my learners.
Realization
What we achieve or do not is influenced by our early inspirations and stoked by our passion. If we develop a sense of purpose, which in turn fires up our tenacity and grit we can all get to achieve our goals. No roads are easy and the choices we make can lead us to different outcomes.
I never had a roadmap because I thrived on the challenges that my different professional roles offered me. Consider the fact that I went from selling ships to selling and enabling solutions.
We are all born with gifts and abilities. It’s what we do with them, that counts. I don’t believe in designations and qualifications – they are at best entitlements for a few. To persevere, rise, and shine from where you come from is what makes it worth the journey.
Last evening, I watched a movie, “A Million Miles Away” which moved me and resonated with me for more than one reason. My sincere thanks to my friend Ajit Mishra for pointing me to this movie.
This what the New York Times writes about that movie:
A Million Miles Away’ Review: From the Fields to Outer Space
The dream of being an astronaut was planted in José Hernández early, when he and his family were migrant workers in 1960s California. Back when the U.S. immigration policy resembled a revolving door more than a steel wall, tens of thousands of families would travel north to harvest seasonal crops. For his parents, the work was in service of a long-held dream: to build a house in their native Michoacán. The children were frequently uprooted and placed in new schools as the family zigzagged across the state, following the work. It wasn’t until a teacher, Ms. Young, intervened that the Hernández parents settled in Stockton, Calif., forsaking their dream for their children’s education. That’s where young José saw the 1969 moon landing on T.V., a moment that ignited a lasting passion for flight.
Sacrifice, grit, perseverance, tenacity: These are the themes that drive “A Million Miles Away,” directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella and based on José Hernández’s memoir, “Reaching for the Stars: The Inspiring Story of a Migrant Farmworker Turned Astronaut,”

1 年Sounds like a great movie! I love how people who hold on to their dreams with tenacity have great stories to tell. And sometimes victories, too. And it's these stories that remind us of the power of people to become more through our trials, if we choose to. Growth is the long game. Well done.

1 年Goosebumps RR Dasgupta ??. After a long time, perhaps since "The Pursuit of Happyness", no movie has impressed me like this one. Dr. Jose's story of triumph is so special; it evoked memories of our own Dr. Kalam. Probably this is how legacies are crafted. I often wonder how life's process comes full circle. During our formative years, we look up to others and draw inspiration. As inspired souls, life pushes us hard in the pursuit of our passions. Then, there comes a stage of self-realization when you find your own voice and decide to give it back— to all those who deserve it. That is how you help others find their voices—to share, care, and influence many more lives ????. #IPR
