What’s the difference between motivation and inspiration?
I’ve been mulling over this question lately, and here’s what I’ve come up with.
Motivation gets something in motion; it gets you to DO something. As the song goes, it moves you to “Get up on the dance floor!” Or whatever you’re wanting and longing to do.
Inspiration also gets something in motion, but usually something spiritual or internal. It ignites a spark of something inside you, within your authentic self. It’s less about doing and more about being.
You can connect the two, so that whatever you do, you do it with compassion and authenticity.
TRY THIS: Use a piece of paper or 3 UnBlocks ?. If you’re using paper, make three columns.
- In the first column or on each side of your first UnBlock?, write six things that you want to do that will “do good” but that you never seem to get around to.
- In the second column or on each side of your second UnBlock?, write six things that inspire you to be your best self. This could be a quotation, something visual, prayer, meditation—whatever brings you to that place of peaceful, positive intent.
- In the third column or on each side of your third UnBlock?, write six things that motivate you to actually DO something.
- If you’re writing your list on a piece of paper, draw lines connecting the ONE item in each category that resonates the strongest. Rewrite those three items on a new line, in the order: inspiration, motivation, one good thing/action.
- If using UnBlocks?, turn each block to the ONE item that resonates the strongest. Line them up in this order: The one inspiration. The one motivation. The one good thing, which now becomes the action.
- These three items form your target goal, a “do-good” combo pack. Schedule an hour (or more) this week to get started on it. Schedule as much time as you need, for as many weeks as you need, to fulfill all three parts of the activity: inspiration, motivation, and action.
Doing good fulfills the heart’s need to connect, to help, and to make a difference. Making a difference brings contentment, and contentment is a form of happiness.
Put in the simplest terms: do good, feel good.
