Inspection of Glacial Lakes Across the Tibetan Plateau Using Drones | Highest Point in the World.

Glacial Lake outburst floods are a huge?concern in the Himalayas and on the Tibetan Plateau. The region experience a serious number of disasters?occurring over the past century which result in?a significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

The local authority is implementing strategies to reduce the risk by arranging daily inspection and monitoring missions using unmanned aerial vehicles as an efficient solution.

The high altitude of the lake which is?surrounded by mountains,?also the harsh environment in the region,?and the wind in the valley are relatively strong, which requires high reliability and wind resistance of the drones performing the mission, but unfortunately, commercial drones that are available in the market can not fulfill these criteria.

ZIYAN unmanned helicopters are designed to be used on plateaus. Due to the gyroscopic effect produced by the large-sized main rotor, the single-rotor helicopter has inherent advantages in stability and wind resistance. In terms of control, the helicopter's unique variable pitch is more responsive to crosswinds and turbulence that allow strong environmental adaptability. Also, ZIYAN UAVs?are equipped with low-temperature customized high-density lithium batteries?to bring a new experience to drone plateau applications.

Serious Challenges:

- The inspection area is surrounded by mountains, which block the signal.

- The air on the plateau is thin, and low a temperature environment.

- The Tibetan mountains with a very high altitude that?exceeds 5,000 meters.

[Overcoming the test of high cold and low temperature, efficient inspection operations]

"The altitude is high, the wind is strong, and the temperature is very low." The extreme natural environment will have higher requirements for the safety and stability of drones.

?ZIYAN?unmanned helicopter takes off and lands autonomously at an altitude of 5,100 meters, and can work?with high performance and adapt?to extreme cold and low-temperature environments of -20°C.

They are?equipped with high-resolution?pods to perform plateau inspection tasks. Also,?the 7-level wind resistance performance can effectively overcome The impact of strong plateau winds on inspection operations and has significantly improved inspection efficiency.

【Establish a relay system to solve the problem of signal interraption】

"It took seven or eight hours to climb up, climb a few steps, stop to take a breath of oxygen, and worry about stepping on the ground." ZIYAN?team overcame all obstacles and headed towards the 5,500-meter-altitude peak, the highest point in the mission area, to?install the ZIYAN?relay communication system to solve the problem of blocking signals and communication obstruction by mountains.

Such a great work, GLOF is a threat to people living downstream and with this tool the community can monitor the glacier lakes and timely evaluate if something unpleasant is predicted beforehand
