Insights into Routines Shaping Venture Emergence: A Scholarly Gemstones Seminar by Associate Professor Paul Spee

On Monday, July 1, 2024, the Institute for Strategic Management at Johannes Kepler University Linz had the pleasure of hosting a research seminar by Associate Professor Paul Spee from the University of Queensland Business School. The seminar, titled "The double-edged sword of routines shaping venture emergence," provided fascinating insights into how routines and resources influence the development of new ventures.

About the Speaker

Paul Spee is an Associate Professor in Strategy at the University of Queensland Business School. His research focuses on routines, strategy, and institutions, and has been published in prestigious journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, and Organization Studies, as well as influential handbooks. Paul currently serves as a Senior Editor for Organization Studies and has served as Chair for the SAP Interest Group within the Academy of Management.

Seminar Highlights

In his presentation, Paul shared findings from a study that tracked a high-tech startup called MatchMe from its inception over a 36-month period. Applying a Routine Dynamics perspective, the study examined how the creation and adjustment of routines enabled the effective use of resources, facilitating the progression of the venture. Key takeaways from the seminar include the clarification of the roles of resource mobilization and routine dynamics in venture progression, contributing to theories on venture emergence, and a discussion of how routines can be both enabling and constraining for new ventures, acting as a "double-edged sword."

Paul's seminar sparked engaging discussions among attendees and provided valuable perspectives on entrepreneurship and strategic management. The insights shared have implications for both researchers and practitioners interested in understanding the factors that shape venture emergence and success.

The Institute for Strategic Management extends its gratitude to Paul Spee for sharing his expertise and looks forward to future collaborations and exchanges on these critical topics.
