Insights into moving DEI forward- Beth’s Corner

Insights into moving DEI forward- Beth’s Corner

Four years ago, YW Boston embarked on a strategic planning process to explore how we could have a greater impact on racial and gender inequities in Boston given our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Part of that process required us to think about how we wanted to approach our work.?

A key tenet for YW Boston is to amplify the voices of others. To that end, we launched our Elevating Lives Series. Elevating Lives is a curated event series that focuses on areas relating to our work to create more inclusive spaces for women, people of color, and especially women of color. It provides a platform for thought leaders across sectors to share their insights and strategies on how best to move diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) forward in your organization. Our previous Elevating Lives speakers have related their personal anecdotes, data, and organizational best practices in ways that transform how attendees understand and implement DEI.?

This year, we're excited to host Professor Patricia Williams for our first Elevating Lives event on Tuesday, October 26, 9:00-10:30AM. Professor Williams is a one of the most provocative intellectuals in American law and a pioneer of both the law and literature and Critical Race Theory movements in American legal theory. She will help us to demystify Critical Race Theory and understand how it can help us to advance diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

On Wednesday, December 8, YW Boston's own Dr. Sarah Faude, Director of Research and Evaluation and Dr. Anouska Bhattacharyya, Director of InclusionBoston will share the importance of measuring behavioral change as a key indicator of successful equity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace and how it's incorporated in our approach.?

Critical Race Theory and DEI measurement are commonly misunderstood topics often raised to thwart DEI efforts. Attending Elevating Lives will help equip you to respond to push back related to these topics and move DEI forward within your organization. The sessions will be engaging and informative. I hope to see you there.
