Insights Into Innovative Sustainable Solutions

(Latest update: 25 September 2024)

Welcome to a brief journey through innovative approaches to some of the most pressing technical and commercial challenges of our time.

This page is an overview of some of my posts on LinkedIn, where I have tried to share practical entrepreneurial solutions that aim to reshape industries while maintaining sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Entrepreneurial Approaches to Solving Technical and Commercial Challenges (Published H2/2024)

  • RELIBOND - Electrification Reimagined: Revolutionizing the cost of electrification by enabling the use of aluminum in high-voltage cabling instead of copper. This breakthrough holds the potential to redefine power infrastructure, offering a more sustainable and cost-efficient alternative to traditional materials.
  • ENVIRONMENT SOLUTION - Modernizing Flood Protection: Rethinking flood protection by breaking away from outdated business models. ENVIRONMENT SOLUTION introduces cost-efficient strategies that deliver savings across the board, benefiting providers and customers alike, without compromising safety or performance.
  • BLADENA - Enhancing Wind Turbine Reliability: Reducing wind turbine failures and operational costs through innovative blade design techniques. By strengthening blades without adding weight, BLADENA ensures durability and efficiency for long-term performance.
  • SOLARTAG - Seamless Solar Integration: Elevating property value by blending aesthetically pleasing solar solutions into rooftops. SOLARTAG combines sustainability and design, offering homeowners a chance to invest in renewable energy without sacrificing aesthetics.
  • PHOTOCAT - Cleaning the Air When the Sun Shines: Reducing the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) in the air. Just like carbon emissions, these gases stem from burning fossil fuels. Photocat's innovation lies in its durable, sunlight-activated coatings. These coatings, applicable to concrete, asphalt, bitumen roofing, and more, initiate a photocatalytic process that reduces NOx and SOx emissions.

Global Energy Consumption and the Role of Heat (2019-2023)

The following insights dive deep into heat's often overlooked but critical role in global energy consumption. I explore how decarbonization strategies can be enhanced by paying attention to this area.

Energy Minimum Pricing: A Path Toward Long-Term Planning. My proposition for setting a minimum price for energy sourced from fossil fuels. While considered radical by some, I believe this approach could provide much-needed stability in energy markets and serve as a powerful incentive for long-term renewable energy investments.

Morgan Stanley’s $50T Decarbonization Oversight. A reflection on Morgan Stanley’s 2019 analysis, which largely ignored the significant role heat plays—representing half of total global energy consumption—despite its importance in the decarbonization process.

The Potential of Solar Thermal. Though my initial focus was on solar heat generation, this analysis explores the broader potential of heat-generating technologies that could compete with the cost-efficiency of fossil fuels.

A Focus on Heat (a 2019-series)

Golf and Energy. A lighthearted analogy illustrating that all decisions, including energy use, boil down to prioritization. This is not an attack on golfers, but rather an illustration of how space and resources could be better utilized.

Cost of heat. Though numbers are somewhat outdated, the principles of my analysis remain applicable. Understanding the economics of heat is key to unlocking its potential in the global energy transition.

Generation. A comprehensive look at both sustainable and non-sustainable methods of heat production, laying the groundwork for future energy planning.

Storage. An overview of current energy storage technologies, focusing on the vital role they play in balancing renewable heat production and consumption.

Integration. How renewable heat production can be effectively integrated into existing fossil-based systems, offering a smooth transition towards sustainability.

Plenty of Room. An examination of the space requirements for renewable energy installations, offering perspective on how land use priorities impact the energy transition.

Credibility Challenges. A deep dive into the obstacles that new technologies and companies face when attempting to enter the market, especially in the energy sector.

Consumption: An Introduction. A primer on global energy consumption, focusing on the various sectors that drive demand and how they relate to the broader decarbonization challenge.

Opportunities in Heat Below 400°C. Why heat demand below 400°C represents a significant opportunity for decarbonization efforts. This segment explores potential technologies and their role in reducing emissions from industrial processes.
