I had a great interview with Jon Erlichman and BNN Bloomberg this week. We chatted about why investors could see a broadening out of the market this year, as well as some key areas to consider. Many thanks, as always, to Jon for the great chat!

Best visual of the week:
?
If you’ve been reading my newsletter for any length of time, you’ll know that I love this chart.? I’ve previously tended to show this chart as it relates to the stock market, but this time around, I thought I’d share the bond market version of it.
?
The dark grey bars show the calendar year returns for the U.S. aggregate bond market and the red numbers show the worst drawdown per year (which is essentially the worst top to bottom bout of volatility each year).
?
You’ll note a few things with this.
?
First of all, every single year, there is some level of volatility. Yes, even with bonds.
?
Second, even though the bond market experiences negative periods each year, it doesn’t impact its long-term performance.? Despite average intra-year drops of 3.4%, annual returns were positive in 43 of 48 years.
?
So, at the end of the day, if you’re a long-term investor, market volatility (no matter what your market – stocks or bonds) is best ignored.

Making Waves for Autism:
?
?
I am absolutely ELATED to announce that the annual fundraiser event I’ve created, Making Waves for Autism, has received an amazing $5,000 grant from the Raymond James Canada Foundation to go to Autism Canada.
?
As many of you know, I created this event to honour my cousin Tyler’s legacy and fulfil his goal of raising funds and awareness for autism. Admittedly, I didn’t know a whole lot about autism before taking on this challenge, but I’ve sure been learning a ton and it’s truly been an eye-opening experience.
?
Did you know that 1 in 50 people in Canada have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum? We are ALL touched by autism.

Please help spread the word, not only about the event, but the information that I’m sharing. Raising awareness helps so much with #autismacceptance

If you’re in a position to donate, all donations benefit Autism Canada and receive tax receipts – https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/making-waves-for-autism-2024/

Do you have a question about the markets? Or perhaps you’d like to learn more about a particular financial planning topic? Maybe you’ve got a question about your own personal situation?
?
Send me your question, and I’ll include it as a topic in an upcoming newsletter: [email protected].
