“Over 100,000 views! In one week.”?
“Man that is crazy! I didn’t think it would ever make it to 50,000.”
This was a recent exchange between my client, Trey, and me.
He’s a retired motocross champion rider with whom I worked on his recently released TEDx StGeorge talk. In it, he discusses a trauma more serious than the many physical injuries he suffered as a professional rider.
When the video was released June 3, 2022, it immediately started getting a large number of views. Within two days, it was over 21,000. In the following five days, views kept growing. It passed the 100,000 mark on the seventh day, and as of this writing, one week after release, it’s over 108,000.
THE GAP
I’ve not seen a client’s video grow this fast in a short time, even those which have had hundreds of thousands or millions of views.
I’ve been asking, “Why is it catching fire and going viral?”
This morning, it hit me. Societies have always looked up to their greatest athletes. They serve as examples of the best achievements to which humans can aspire.
Whether it’s running/driving fastest, climbing the highest, or jumping the furthest, we celebrate extraordinary accomplishments.
This also creates an emotional gap between those athletes and the rest of us. They’re often put on a pedestal because they seem to be so unlike us — superhuman in many regards.

CLOSING THE GAP
Which is why Trey’s speech is touching many lives. In his talk, he discusses an emotionally traumatic event when he was twelve. He buried the incident for seven years until it came roaring to the surface and he was forced to deal with it.?
In that moment, he was no longer Trey, the champion racer, he was Trey, the human being struggling like you and me. He closed the gap and made us just like him.
Other well known clients I’ve worked with who were willing to share their deepest pain and most difficult struggles also shed their super hero facade. They brought themselves to our level. In that moment, they become one of us.
This is why videos like Trey’s go viral. Their story becomes our story. And it touches us at a deep level.
You might not be a champion rider, or well known to the world, but, you can still have an impact. Share the difficult experiences, the challenges which seem too large to overcome, and the day-to-day struggles, and you’ll create a bond with others that opens a door to leaving a lasting impact.

2 年Michael Davis I think there are a lot of variables that make something go viral but an engaging story is certainly one of them. Communicated verbally or visually, a great story has specific elements to it: drama. Humor, empathy. and resolution. No one helps speakers get to those ingredients faster than Mike.
