Insights from my Bali relocation

Insights from my Bali relocation

Ever find yourself caught in the cycle of dreaming but not acting? Or having incredible ideas, but they remain just that - ideas.

You overthink, procrastinate, and eventually lose sight of what it was you were initially so excited about. I've been there many times in my life - ideas I've dwelled on and eventually abandoned or put on the back burner because of bandwidth, energy, and a whole host of other real or imaginary excuses.

And then there have been the ideas I have wholeheartedly pursued. Take my recent relocation to Bali, for instance. On the surface, it seemed impractical. There were a whole host of reasons that the relocation wasn’t the right move. My partner's job tied us down, the kids were thriving in their current schools, and financially, it wasn't the most logical move. But deep down, I felt a pull - a certainty that this change was necessary.

So, we took the leap, committing to the decision despite all of the uncertainties. I followed my gut and we made a decision.

And you know what happened?

It all worked out, exactly as it was meant to.

From this experience, I've learned some profound lessons:

  1. Consciously create your own benchmark for success: Instead of measuring success by conventional standards, like financial stability, I chose to gauge it by the joy and fulfillment we experienced as a family. This shift liberated us from the pressure to replicate our previous lifestyle, allowing us to embrace new experiences fully.
  2. Jump before you're ready: Waiting for the perfect moment often means waiting forever. Sometimes, you have to trust your instincts and take the plunge, even if you don't have all the answers yet. We jumped… and what I know for sure is that if we’d been waiting for everything to be lined up and ready, we would still be waiting!
  3. Trust your intuition: Deep down, you always know what the ‘right’ next move is. Learn to trust that inner voice, even when it goes against conventional wisdom. You can do this by tuning into the signals your body gives you when something feels right or wrong. When you follow your instincts and recognise it was a good move, make sure to pause and acknowledge this so that you build up your evidence bank of trust in yourself.
  4. Make the decision that this will be a game-changer for you: Decisiveness is a powerful tool. By affirming that any change or step you take will be beneficial for your life in some way, you set the stage for profound shifts to occur.
  5. Find fun in the experience: We chose to make this move as fun and enjoyable as possible which meant finding the light side in the challenges that came up along the way. Often as adults, we lose our sense of play, and life becomes a very serious undertaking. By injecting a bit more fun and lightness into our experience, it allowed us to discover the delight in everyday moments.

These insights can be applied to any change you are undergoing in your own life.

What is one idea or dream you've been hesitating to pursue, and if you applied these insights would it change how you move forward today?
