Insights from Guy Spier on Mastering Your Inner Voice
Welcome to another issue of Uncle Kruno Weekly!
This week, I want to share some insights from a recent podcast episode featuring one of my favorite investors, Guy Spier. In this nearly two-hour masterclass titled "A Masterclass On Building Wealth, Wisdom & Success", Spier touches on a wide range of topics, but one segment stood out to me—"Be Aware of Your Inner Voice." The importance of psychology in investing (and life) cannot be overstated, and Spier's thoughts on the inner voice really hit home.
Guy Spier has always been a role model for me. His calm and thoughtful demeanor makes him a joy to listen to, and there’s always a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from his words. In today’s issue, I want to highlight and summarize the segment where Spier discusses the power of being aware of and controlling, your inner voice.
The Power of the Inner Voice
Spier recounts a lesson he learned from listening to Tony Robbins’ cassette tapes years ago—a lesson about the inner voice we all possess. This inner voice runs a constant commentary on our actions, often influencing our self-perception and decision-making processes. It’s something we all experience, though we may not always be conscious of its presence or power.
According to Spier, the inner voice can take on many forms. Sometimes, it can be overly critical, chastising us for even the smallest mistakes: “You’re an idiot. Did you really do that? No one else would be so foolish.†Other times, it can be overwhelmingly positive, pushing us forward with confidence: “You’re awesome! You did that—now go do it again!â€
The first step, Spier suggests, is simply to become aware of this voice. Pay attention to what it’s saying and how it changes based on different life events. For instance, we’ve all had moments where something we did made us feel on top of the world. Conversely, there are times when that inner voice has been harsh and unforgiving.
Taking Control of the Inner Voice
One of the key takeaways from Spier’s reflection is the idea that we have the power to control our inner voice. It’s not something that happens to us randomly, like the weather. We can shape its tone and content. This concept is central to what Tony Robbins calls “personal powerâ€â€”the ability to steer your inner dialogue in a way that empowers you, rather than undermines you.

Spier shares a personal experience where he consciously adjusted his inner voice to help him navigate a potentially risky situation. After having a few glasses of wine, he found himself needing to drive. Although he wasn’t sure if he was over the legal limit, he knew that alcohol could make him feel overly confident. So, he decided to turn up the volume on his anxious inner voice, telling himself to be ultra-careful, to drive as if an accident was just around the corner. By doing this, he counteracted the effects of alcohol and ensured that he drove safely.
Practical Application
Spier’s insights on the inner voice can be applied far beyond the realm of investing. Whether you’re dealing with a challenging project at work, navigating a tough personal situation, or even just trying to improve your daily habits, the inner voice plays a crucial role. The key is to recognize when your inner voice is helpful and when it’s holding you back—and then take steps to adjust it accordingly.
