Connecting donors and community leaders around the world for lasting change
Incredible last day of the @givingtuesday Global Summit 2024.?
Kicked off by @henrytimms who shared advice on how leaders need to combine oldpower with #newpower and consider the coming implications of #m-power – “machine” power and AI.?When you contemplate using new power, Henry says you must ask yourself: 1. Do you need the crowd? 2. Do you have any legitimacy with the crowd? 3. Are you williong to cede and share control with the crowd and 4. Do you have the commitment to sustain the engagement of the crowd?
Next we had presentations from country leaders with deep insights and powerful experiences.?@CatherineMwendwa from the GivingTuesday Africa hub shared an example of an alumni campaign and reminded us we sometimes have to “unbrand” to collaborate.?She also described the “radical imagination” of a campaign inspired by Wangari Mathai -- #trees4goals where players plant a tree for every goal scored.?It’s spreading rapidly, as great ideas do!
@WilliamDeng of South Sudan told us how they built a medical clinic in a community with no health services that now has had 3800 visitors in two years and no fatalities.?He urged the group to “empower the good to do more good”.?
@AlexanderNehme from GivingTuesday Lebanon inspired us with Khalil Gibran’s quote” Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need” and explained their model of “unlimited giving – talent, care, time, in kind donations, prayers, attention, blood and money. They’ve also created a fun giving quiz to engage donors.?
@ZoiaZherelnikova from GivingTuesday Ukraine gave us extremely timely data on giving in Ukraine: donations increased by at least 10% last year (between February and July of 2022) and the number of registered NGOs grew twelve-fold from ?4.21-4.22.?The #GivingTuesday campaign took place in 2022 successfully with participation from 1,000 educational institutions because she said it was needed more than ever.?

@AzimChristoper from GivingTuesday Pakistan spoke of the devastating floods in Pakistan in 2022 and how local, national and global funding played a part in the response and recovery.?I’m personally pleased that GlobalGiving helped support that fundraising.?
And finally, @DianaCanoMiller shared how she believes Columbia can heal from 50 years of war through generosity and how giving supports peace and can change communities.
It’s been a privilege and honor to be with this group in person and I’m grateful for vaccines, grateful we are able to be in community again and grateful for the generosity of all of the participants with their ideas, energies and goodwill.
