Insights from the BioMed-AI Summer School 2024

For the second consecutive year, Verimpact proudly sponsored the 2nd edition of the BioMed-AI Summer School, hosted at Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal on 11-13 September 2024.

Organized by the Institute for Sustainable Development - EPLO and the Academy of Athens to celebrate the voices shaping the present and future of biomedicine, this international initiative brought together leading experts from all over Europe and overseas to explore the most pressing topics at the intersection of artificial intelligence, biomedical research, healthcare, sustainable development and ethics.

With the transformative impact of AI on healthcare as the overarching theme for this year’s program, the School offered a wide range of lectures and workshops on personalized medicine, data analytics, and the ethical, legal and social implications of employing AI technologies within a clinical setting.

As artificial intelligence continues to shape the global medical and healthcare landscapes, one of the main goals of these sessions was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), especially when it comes to developing new applications and solutions for patients.

Our Managing Director, Christina Deligianni , joined the 3-day event in Lisbon to share an expert overview on AI-powered tools within the context of climate change and sustainability, offering a demonstration of the Verimpact ESG assessment platform. Christina also chaired a panel on Global Healthcare Research and AI, which featured the insightful contributions of Zisis Kozlakidis from IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization , Válter R Fonseca from WHO Regional Office for Europe , and Danai Spentzou from European Parliament .

Marina Deligianni , our Training and Community Manager, also travelled to Lisbon to represent Verimpact and participated in the School.

This year, the School also received the support of World Health Organization (WHO) , IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization and BBMRI-ERIC .

“Gathering all these diverse voices in one room truly enriched all the different discussions around ethical AI and innovation in healthcare. Once again, the BioMed-AI Summer School has contributed to emphasize the importance of advancing AI responsibly, and in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I’m already looking forward to next year’s edition!” — Christina Deligianni
