Insights from AWS Space Accelerator Startups for the Upcoming Space Symposium

Back in March, we announced our AWS Space Accelerator together with Seraphim Capital, to invest in the space industry by providing technical, business and mentoring resources to a cohort of startups from around the globe representing different stages of company development, from early seed to later series. Seraphim provided deep industry expertise and an unparalleled mentor network that includes investors, technologists, product specialists and more across all areas of public sector focus represented in space tech.

?Continuing on our space focus, I am excited to attend the Space Symposium , the premier event for global space professionals.?We will host a breakfast roundtable with five of our inaugural AWS Space Accelerator startups. They will share their experiences and learnings from our accelerator and how they are tackling space’s greatest challenges.?AWS has been the technology infrastructure to host innovations from synthesizing oxygen on Mars to launching satellites. ?

?In anticipation of this event, I wanted to share a few exciting accomplishments and insights from our cohort since the launch!

?1/ ?Bias for Action.??Three of our cohort companies, HawkEye360, D-Orbit, and Orbital Sidekick all successfully launched satellites during the accelerator program as part of the SpaceX Transporter launch.

?2/ Think Big. ??We saw Lunar OutPost and Nokia work on LTE/4G on the Moon! Lunar Outpost has been selected for the first Rover Mission on the Lunar South Pole.?Lunar Outpost is supporting Nokia’s LTE/4G NASA Tipping Point project with Intuitive Machines, a leader in cutting-edge technologies for space, to build, integrate and test the first-ever LTE/4G network on the surface of the Moon. One of the primary objectives of the Nokia technology demonstration is to validate that Nokia’s LTE/4G technology can support proximity communications for lunar operations and future human spaceflight, as well as to begin building important infrastructure that will enable rapid growth in the cislunar economy.

3/ Compliance and security matter in Space too!??LeoLabs and New Zealand Space Agency- regulatory platform for Low Earth Orbit: (LEO) The world's first dedicated regulatory platform for LEO: the Space Regulatory and Sustainability Platform, developed as a joint initiative between LeoLabs and the New Zealand Space Agency (NZSA). The NZSA is a leader in best practices and industry standards for promoting, regulating, and guiding the global new space community. The regulatory platform offers a ground-breaking set of capabilities to empower the New Zealand government to meet its stated mission of encouraging a sustainable space environment for future generations.

The cohort noted the intense collaboration between the teams as a success driver for helping to support one another’s business objectives and using partnerships to drive potential customer revenue opportunities. The cohort also noted how much GovCloud was a differentiator for the teams to be able to do business because it meant their workloads were able to meet the complex requirements that government industries require for security and privacy.
