Insights from an Actuary: Volunteering, Encouragement, and Healthcare Policy

A few reasons why I love volunteering with the Society of Actuaries:

  • I get to expand my network of industry insiders. I’ve come to know so many talented people through volunteering events, and those relationships are so beneficial to me, professionally and personally.
  • I’ve been able to share some of what I have learned from my time dedicated to this industry. After 20+ years in this field, I’ve picked up a couple things. I love sharing insight with others who can use it to fuel their careers.
  • Volunteering has pushed me to try new things and face challenges I wouldn’t typically encounter, giving me new perspectives and methods of problem solving I wouldn’t have otherwise developed.

The Significant Role of Healthcare Actuaries in Shaping Healthcare Policy

One thing I don’t think many realize about healthcare actuaries is the significant role we play in shaping healthcare policy. We get to use our expertise in analyzing healthcare data and trends to provide insight into the costs and risks associated with different healthcare policy proposals. We may advise policymakers on local, state, and federal levels to make sure healthcare programs remain financially sustainable over time. You just never know where this industry will take you!

Well, wouldn’t you know! Actuaries DO know how to have fun. Take a peek.

Great insights, Dave! Your last point on volunteering definitely resonates with me. Volunteering has given me opportunities to try new things and develop new skills that I most likely wouldn't have been able to do at my day job. And because you get to network with others along the way it's that much more rewarding.
