Insights from the 9th Nordic Biogas Conference 2024: Advancing Circular Economy and Nutrient Recovery

?? Just returned from the #NordicBiogasConference 2024 in Aalborg, where I had the opportunity to speak as part of a session on Circular Economy – Waste Management – Feedstock and Fertiliser Quality, moderated by Linn Andersson from Avfall Sverige.

In my presentation, I highlighted the essential role of nutrient recovery in creating sustainable systems across agriculture, municipalities, and industry, sharing insights from the EU Interreg BSR project, CiNURGi. Our project focuses on addressing nutrient imbalances in the Baltic Sea Region through innovative recycling of nutrient-rich biomass. A key takeaway? Establishing a common language and standardized practices for recycled nutrients is essential. This shared framework can enhance policy alignment, improve market acceptance, and streamline collaboration, paving the way for a truly effective circular economy.

Session Highlights: It was inspiring to share the stage with Claes Lundberg of Renahav Sverige AB and Lea B?hme of SORPA bs., who each brought valuable perspectives on circular models in Sweden and Iceland.

• Claes Lundberg discussed Renahav’s model of transforming seafood industry waste into organic fertilizers and biogas. This approach not only addresses local waste challenges but also creates high-value products for agriculture and industrial use—a strong example of local circular economy at work.
• Lea B?hme shared her experiences with Iceland’s only biogas and composting facility. She emphasized how public engagement in household waste separation is key to producing quality biowaste, which in turn supports effective digestate and compost production. Lea’s insights highlighted the importance of involving communities to achieve sustainable outcomes in waste management.

Our session underscored how the biogas industry can address environmental impact while also fostering economic growth through sustainable innovation. We explored how nutrient recovery and biogas production can work hand-in-hand with waste management, renewable energy, and agriculture to close resource loops and create new business opportunities.
