Insights from 52 Indian Professionals for Happier, Healthier Mental Health
In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, we spoke to 52 Indian professionals to gather their valuable thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on mental health. The survey analysis uncovered enlightening insights about the importance of mental health awareness and support for Indian professionals. In this article, we'll delve into workplace well-being, available resources, the power of open discussions, and actionable takeaways for organizations.
Our Key Findings:
Mental and Physical Health are Equally Important:
All respondents unanimously emphasized the equivalence of mental and physical health, recognizing the interconnectedness of the two.
Employer Responsibility in Mental Health:
A majority of 93% of participants believe that employers are responsible for educating and supporting employees in mental health matters.
Impact of Mental Health on Work:
One out of three individuals revealed taking time off work due to mental health concerns, highlighting the direct impact mental health has on workplace performance.
Supportive Workplace Culture:
Half of the participants reported having a supportive workplace culture where they received the necessary support and resources when they needed to take time off.
Breaking the Stigma and Promoting Mental Health Discussions in the Indian Workplace
The overwhelming consensus is that mental health should become an acceptable workplace discussion topic. People believe fostering open discussions about mental health contributes to happier and more productive employees, even without divulging personal details. Prioritizing mental health is vital as it forms the foundation for well-being, creativity, and productivity.
Mental Health Support in the Workplace:
Participants highlighted a significantly positive impact of mental health support and resources in the workplace. Education and training programs contribute to greater employee understanding and awareness.
Equal Access to Mental Health Support:
Everyone unanimously agrees that mental health support and resources should be readily accessible to all employees. When help is lacking, it has a domino effect on employee productivity, impacting other aspects of their professional lives and success.
Reducing Stigma and Improving Well-being:
While open discussions about mental health can foster connection among employees, it is widely acknowledged that company culture, privacy policies, and supportiveness play a crucial role in creating a positive environment for discussing mental health issues.
Conclusion: Prioritize Mental Health?
Our survey analysis emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health in the workplace. Providing accessible support, reducing stigma, and fostering a positive work culture are vital strategies for creating a supportive environment that enhances employee satisfaction and peace. By understanding the perspectives and experiences of employees, organizations can take actionable steps toward improving mental well-being.?

External Resources: Counselling, Therapy, Meditation, and Mental Health Apps like Calm, Headspace, and BetterHelp.?
Internal Resources: Friends, Family, Partners, their religions, guides, etc.?
Therapy and meditation groups have worked best for most participants, followed by practicing spirituality and having a robust internal support system.?
As Harshika Jhaveri, Counselling Psychologist, says, “Internal and external anchors help us gain perspective and keep us moving forward. Research also suggests that those with a strong faith (however they define and practice their religion) are more resilient.?The five pillars of wellness for a thriving life are physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. A void in any of these areas will hurt our well-being.

Mental health support goes beyond taking care of your employees once they reach a point where they need help. Workspaces must start prioritizing good work and people culture so employees can have mental satisfaction and peace.?
Shruti Maheshwari, Sleep and Happiness Coach says, “When faced with any challenge, you should move towards the sun like a sunflower.” And also helps you “Sleep Like a Baby” to alleviate stress further.?
While some organizations prioritize mental health and create a supportive environment specifically for Indian professionals, there is still a chunk yet to learn about Mental Health.?
